Because what happens in Germany will also affect Austria in some form at some point, sometimes sooner, sometimes later, sometimes stronger, sometimes weaker. In “Doc 1: Germany is slipping away – from model student to problem child?” on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at 8:15 p.m. on ORF 1 and on ORF ON, Hanno Settele sets out on a journey from Vienna to Berlin to find out what Germany is really doing economically, socially and politically and what that could mean for Austria. At 9:05 p.m. the documentary “The Torn Society: When Injustice Divides” is dedicated to the factors that lead to unfair income distributions.

Hanno Settele – a real Vorarlberger with a German passport – finds the current developments in Germany rather worrying. In his opinion, a lot of things are not going as they should. He wants to dedicate himself to Austria’s big neighbor in as many facets as possible and investigate where there are problems – from the economy to the political discourse to integration, from education to the energy transition to infrastructure. What are the biggest construction sites that Germany is currently struggling with? And don’t they seem very familiar to us in this country? In the past 20 years, the bottom tenth of the population has lost ten percent of their real income, while that of the top tenth has increased by 25 percent. The gap between social classes is growing and social peace is threatened. Justice is innate as the central moral authority of our lives. Even small children act helpfully and cooperatively. Which factors lead to unfair income distribution and why and to what extent are disadvantages accepted?
