Then: “Doc 1: From local emperor to bogeyman? Austria’s mayor under pressure” and “Save the village”

Vienna (OTS) “Cheeky, but cowardly”. This is how the captain in Ödön von Horvath’s novel “Stories from the Vienna Woods” describes the Austrians. For “Doc 1: Austria – Your Clichés!” Hanno Settele will be on the trail of the truth about nine federal states and their prejudices on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at 8:15 p.m. on ORF 1. “Doc 1: From local emperor to bogeyman?” follows at 9:05 p.m. Austria’s mayor under pressure,” the documentary “Save the Village” at 9:55 p.m.

“Doc 1: Austria – Your clichés!” – 8:15 p.m

Year after year, Austria attracts people from all over the world who want to live, work or study here. With its landscapes and its traditions, the country undoubtedly offers many attractions. But who are these Austrians and what sets them apart? Is the tale of the grumpy Viennese, the mountain-loving Tyrolean, the “funny” Carinthian true? To find out, Hanno Settele looks at the nine federal states and the associated prejudices individually. He examines stereotypes and differences in mentality, finds supposed truths and unchallenged peculiarities. “The truth is reasonable for people,” Ingeborg Bachmann once said.

“Doc 1: From local emperor to bogeyman? Austria’s mayor under pressure” – 9:05 p.m

There are 2093 municipalities with the same number of mayors in Austria. Compared to federal politicians, on the one hand they have a lot of power – they can issue approvals and implement projects easily – but on the other hand they have an immensely high burden, which comes from the excessive bureaucracy and often direct hostility and threats from the population. Lisa Gadenstätter goes on a road trip through some municipalities in Austria and learns a lot about the professional and emotional pressure of our mayors and also surprising things about the differences in earnings. Political scientist Peter Filzmaier is an expert at Lisa Gadenstätter’s side. He explains the differences in authority, problems with recruiting young people and the still low proportion of women.

“Save the Village” – 9:55 p.m

The village is happiness – an ideal that many dream of: a main square as a lively center, a grocer with whom you can chat, an inn where you are always welcome – and on the edge a view of meadows and farms. But the rural exodus is putting the village to the test: the young people are moving away, the businesses have to close, the shops are empty. In her documentary, Teresa Distelberger shows new perspectives and talks about people whose ideas are helping to make the village community sustainable again.
