China and Cambodia are a role model for equality, mutual trust and an advantageous cooperation between countries of different sizes, the Chinese President Xi Jinping explained on Thursday at a meeting with the Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni during his state visit in Cambodia.
XI said he believes that Chinese modernization will offer neighboring countries, including Cambodia, more options.
The relationships between China and Cambodia have held the global changes and have always remained rock -solid. The bilateral relationships were forged and maintained by the older generation of state and government heads of the two countries.
In February 2023, during the visit of the then Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen in China, both sides agreed to develop a “Diamond cooperation framework” with six focus areas: political cooperation, production capacity and quality, agriculture, energy, security and interpersonal exchange.
In September 2023, Hun Manet China elected his first official travel destination abroad after taking up his office as Prime Minister of Cambodia. At his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Hun Manet promised to further deepen the close friendship between Cambodia and China.
In May 2024, a street in Phnom Penh was renamed “Xi Jinping Boulevard” by the Royal Government of Cambodia in honor of the historical merits of the Chinese head of state. At the namesake ceremony, Hun Manet emphasized that bilateral relationships under the leadership and joint efforts of XI and the Cambodian state leaders had entered the best phase of their history.
Successful results in economic and trade policy cooperation
First, the bilateral trade has significantly expanded thanks to the free trade agreement “Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership” (RCEP) and the free trade agreement between China and Cambodia. China has been the largest trading partner Cambodia for 13 years. In 2024, bilateral trade reached a volume of $ 17.83 billion, which corresponds to an increase of 20.7 percent compared to the previous year.
The approval of high-quality Cambodian agricultural and fishing products such as rice, bananas, mangoes, long-term fruits, coconuts and basa fish for the Chinese market has not only enriched the food tables of the Chinese consumers, but also increases the income of the Cambodian population.
Second, investment cooperation has further deepened. China has been the largest foreign investor in Cambodia for 13 years. About 95.4 percent of the Cambodian surveyed are positive about Chinese companies that invest in Cambodia or work. And 95 percent believe that China has made a positive contribution to the development of the global economy, according to a current CGTN survey.
Cultural exchange promotes relationships between China and Cambodia
In addition to political and economic cooperation, the two countries are also a model in the area of cultural exchange, which not only promotes mutual understanding, but also strengthens the relationship between the two peoples.
The interpersonal relationships between China and Cambodia, which represent an important pillar of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, were further strengthened by the year of interpersonal exchange between China and Cambodia 2024.
Over the years, the medical cooperation programs, including “Love Heart Journey”, “Bright Journey” and “Smile Journey”, enabled the population to be high -quality health care in more than 20 provinces and cities.
As a cultural bridge between the two countries, the Confucius Institute has offered more than 100,000 Cambodian learners free Chinese courses since its foundation in Cambodia in 2009.
It is expected that the cultural exchange between the two countries under the direction of the Global Civilization initiative proposed by China will further expand, of which areas such as culture, youth, media, think tanks, tourism, technology, healthcare and restoration will benefit from cultural assets.
