Diakonie calls for the expansion of higher nursing schools with a Matura

Education Minister Martin Polaschek visits the nursing students of the Diakonie in Carinthia

Feldkirchen/Carinthia (OTS) On the occasion of Education Minister Martin Polaschek’s visit, Diakonie emphasized the importance of expanding nursing training, especially those leading to a high school diploma.

On Friday, the minister visited the nursing students of the Diakonie in Feldkirchen/Carinthia and received practical insights into the everyday training at the College for Social Pedagogy, the School for Social Care Professions (SOB) and the Higher Education Institute for Nursing and Social Care.

The Diakonie representatives spoke to the Minister of Education about the different types of schools, all of which successfully counteract the shortage of skilled workers in the area of care and support. In particular, the practitioners emphasized the importance of expanding the 5-year training for young people aged 15 and over: the Higher Education Institute for Nursing and Social Care (HLSP) started 4 years ago and after 3 years of school, 15 of the 85 students have already completed nursing assistant training.

“They are already in demand from employers. Our experience is that our students want to continue working in this area and can gain further qualifications with the additional Matura they have acquired. For young people, this training is a perfect introduction to the nursing sector,” says HLSP director Susanne Lissy, summing up the first successful years of this type of school, which has now also been included in the mainstream school system.

After their five-year school career with a high school diploma, HLSP graduates have numerous professional opportunities in an increasingly sought-after industry. “Whether in the health, care and nursing sector, when working with people with disabilities, in child and youth welfare or in administration in the social sector: the professional opportunities are numerous and well-trained nursing assistants are in high demand on the job market,” emphasizes Silke Watzenig, the manager responsible for the education department.

“In general, our nursing training courses have a high practical relevance. As a large employer in the social sector, we know how important professional expertise but also the right attitude is in your future job. We attach great importance to both,” emphasizes Susanne Prentner-Vitek, board member of the Diakonie in Carinthia.

“The graduates of nursing training are in high demand in their disciplines and usually receive job offers during their internships,” said the Diakonie representatives.

A total of around 300 nursing students are currently being trained at Diakonie in Carinthia. Your training paths are: the College of Social Education (currently 115 students), the School for Social Care Professions (SOB) (currently 102 in training to become nursing assistants) and the Higher Education Institute for Nursing and Social Care, where there are currently 84 students 15 years in training. 15 of them are already qualified nursing assistants.
