They were amateur goalkeeper, as a DFB base coordinator they came to football full-time-and gave up a safe job.

Yes, at that time it was not an easy decision as a two-time father whether I stopped in the public service for a two-year contract with the DFB. At first I had only let myself be taken off free of charge. Many dream of turning their hobby into a profession. I never regretted it.

During the DFB activity, Bremen’s coach Florian Kohfeldt asked whether they did not want to work as a co-coach on Werders U23. Shortly afterwards they were on the Bundesliga stage.

True, after relegation against Heidenheim in the relegation 2020, however, I was released again. Half a year later, Werder’s head of department Birte Brüggemann asked me whether I could imagine saving Bremen’s women from relegation. We have been writing this story since April 2021.

Did you do everything right with the move to women?

I wouldn’t give it that way. Rather, a circle closes for me. As a base coordinator, I was also an association coach for the female area. From 2009 I had to deal with today’s Bundesliga and internationals such as Michelle Ulbrich, Nina Lührßen and Pia-Sophia Wolter, Reena Wichmann or Giovanna Hoffmann. In this respect, as a coach of the women’s Bundesliga, I went back to the beginning.

What are the biggest differences?

It is a different clientele. I always say very flat: the players come a lot more from the real life. Because the profit has not yet progressed so far and not such sums are paid, women have to do something for the time after the career. We have a very clever team with many students. Almost everything is reflected. And the players are very down -to -earth – you get a lot back as a trainer. More than in men.

Thomas Horsch has been a coach of SV Werder for four years, who played against Bayern Munich for the first time in the club history in the final of the DFB Cup on Thursday. The former goalkeeper was the co-trainer of the Bremen men between 2017 and 2020, before that DFB base coordinator and goalkeeper coach of the German U17 juniors at the European Championship triumph 2016.

Is it less selfish or more honest in the cabin?

What I lack the most in the football of women is that, apart from the address for understandable reasons, I can’t really notice the cabin life. But in no case, the female area is doing a sporting way: there are the same internal skirmishes, challenges and problems.

What makes your team strong?

Football is ultimately a martial arts according to certain rules. Guys may bring these competition hardness a little more, so it’s so helpful if girls play with them for a long time. I tried to push this mentality so that we can develop into an established Bundesliga club.

The character test in the cup semi-final in the sold-out folk park stadium against the HSV has brilliantly passed.

You have to say that the discrepancy between the first and second Bundesliga is still very large among women. But without the appropriate attitude we would not have done this against the backdrop with this dramaturgy. When the Hamburg equalization fell, the eardrum almost burst. It was amazing what this game made with us.

How do you mean that?

I was the calm myself down at the bottom of the field, but after that we were all agitated for days. We had played on Sunday and only the first training session again on Wednesday – I have never looked into so many dead faces. Then you ask yourself: What does that do with you if you have this mental burden and media attention every three or four days. I can understand much better how personalities in the men’s Bundesliga change under this pressure. In contrast, the women’s Bundesliga is really very deeply relaxed (laughs).

How do you start the cup final against the Munich women on Thursday?

Bayern have something to lose! It was not for nothing that they have become champions for the third time. The team is peppered with international quality. It will be important that we use our moments.

Is the women’s German football on the right track with the third time in a row sold out in a row?

Yes and no. Own venue, sold -out stadium, of course we are on the right track. But: I find the appointment on May 1st, sporty. We play the final on Thursday and at the weekend is Bundesliga again. Fortunately, only one team descends, so that our game at 1. FC Köln has no relevance. And Bavaria is already a master. Otherwise that would be a distortion of competition. I would find an appointment after the Bundesliga season much better and more attractive.

The increase in the league on 14 clubs for the new season are supported?

In any case. Eleven competitive games in a half series are not enough. When we talk about professionalization, more play opportunities are part of it. I would also like the UEFA to do more. If fourth or five took place on the European stage, the league would be even more interesting.

There are big problems in Offspring.

Yes, the U19 did not qualify for the European Championship, the U17 is not there for the second time. One has to counteract this development. We have a quantity problem in the offspring, if we don’t stay there properly, we will be missing the talents at some point. There is no A-youth for women due to the lack of mass. A talented U17 player has to go to the second or first team immediately. So unfinished personalities come up to assert themselves in the Bundesliga. This transition is difficult.

You can hear how much the football of women captivates them. Why do you stop at the end of the season?

(laughs) I don’t stop working. You always have to question whether you are satisfied or not. Anyone who is a coach of a soccer team must never get into the state of making one meter less. For me, the right point has come after four years. I leave my successor (Friederike Kromp, editor’s note) an established Bundesliga club who is now in the cup final.

What will you do afterwards? With Wolfsburg and Bavaria, Germany’s first addresses in women’s football need new coaches.

I listen to everything and assume that I will continue to work in this professional field. It is a lot of fun working with people. And I make no difference between Livia Peng or Jiri Pavlenka, between Larissa Mühlhaus or Claudio Pizarro. To be able to pass on something on the soccer field is still glorious for me.
