Agriculture Minister Totschnig did not want to welcome the animal rights activists wearing pig masks yesterday: 14 arrests
Vienna (OTS) – A decision to end fully slatted pig flooring must be made within the next 3 weeks. Then it would be the last Council of Ministers at which the full column ban in the Animal Protection Act could be repaired after the objection by the Constitutional Court during this legislative period. Since ÖVP Minister Totschnig was not willing to hold a meeting, twenty animal rights activists wearing pig masks entered shortly after 11 a.m. yesterday “Delegation of Pigs” the Ministry of Agriculture and asked for an interview. Because this was refused, the activists chained themselves to each other by the neck with D-Locks in the entrance area and occupied it. 7 hours later they were contacted by the police cleared.
The police acted remarkably carefully and professionally. The animal rights activists were cut loose with a flex, fire blankets and water cooling. 14 people ended up in the police detention center in Roßauerlände. They were held there for 16 hours and have just been released.
VGT chairman DDr. Martin Balluch said: “With their relatively careful and professional approach, the police have proven that violence in such cases is completely unnecessary and counterproductive. It remains to be hoped that with any FPÖ participation in the government, the police will not relapse again. Minister Totschnig should realize that burying one’s head in the sand is not a solution. The problem will not go away. The pigs must also be heard. Only straw instead of concrete slats can be the future.
