VGT calls for protection of parent animals – at the ECJ hearing on July 11, 2024, the federal states’ wolf extermination regulations will be declared illegal.
Vienna (OTS) – The photo of the young wolf shot in Rauris horrified animal rights activists. It appears to be an unusually small animal. Since a birth this year is out of the question, the animal must come from the previous year. The size and body mass prove that the wolf was extremely hungry while growing up and that is why it remained so small. The explanation for this is obvious: the hunters shot the animal’s parents last year, so that the children starved or almost starved. It could therefore be a one-year-old young wolf from the Dobratsch family in Carinthia, whose parents were simply shot without causing any harm. The 11th shooting has now been reported in Carinthia, the number of unreported cases is much higher.
VGT chairman DDr. Martin Balluch is horrified: “The fact that wolf parents do not have a reprieve while feeding their children is an absolute scandal and horrific animal cruelty. This shows the true attitude of the wolf hunters and their allies in the state governments: they don’t care about extreme animal suffering. No one believes the crocodile tears for cunning sheep, it’s all about loss of profit, which is supposed to be reduced by the suffering of starving child animals. The result is that, in desperation, they search for food close to people without having learned hunting skills. This is a home-made problem. Reason instead of a witch hunt for wolves should be expected in the 21st century!

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has now announced that the main hearing on the question of the legality of Austria’s handling of wolves will take place on July 11, 2024. The responsible attorney general has already stated that she considers the wolf extermination regulations to be unlawful. Normally the ECJ follows their views. Balluch says: “The state councilors of some federal states, especially Carinthia, Tyrol and Salzburg, want to eradicate wolves in Austria and claim that they exist in large numbers elsewhere anyway. This is clearly illegal because the wolf must also be in good conservation status nationally and regionally. There is also the question of whether one can be too stupid or too stingy to protect the herd and instead kill the wolves straight away. Here too, the Attorney General’s answer is a clear no. The extermination regulations must be repealed nationwide and Austria must also return to the rule of law with regard to animals!
