May 5th: European Day of Protest for Equality for People with Disabilities / SAVE-THE-DATE Public meeting October 10th, 2024
Vienna (OTS) – Austria signed the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities 16 years ago. The consistent implementation of the rights of people with disabilities enshrined in the Convention is still worryingly far away, as the UN State Audit 2023 showed.
On May 5th, the European Day of Protest for Equality for People with Disabilities, the Independent Monitoring Committee is presenting the focus topic for 2024: De-institutionalization.
“Many people with disabilities cannot lead a self-determined life. They live, work and learn in special facilities under the influence of others. Austria needs a plan to dismantle institutions. The UN expert committee in Geneva also found this.”

“Austria is still the country of homes. This contradicts the UN CRPD. During the 2023 state review, Austria was heavily criticized for not taking steps towards de-institutionalization. There is a lack of a plan for the Austria-wide expansion of community-based support services and the reduction of homes.”
