David Wang from Huawei: UBB Advanced paves the way to all intelligence

At the 10th Ultra-Broadband Forum (UBBF 2024), David Wang, Executive Director of the Huawei Board and Chairman of the Board of ICT Infrastructure, delivered a keynote address entitled “UBB Advanced Paves the Way to All Intelligence.” Opening the event, he shared his latest insights on the AI industry and explained Huawei’s all-intelligence strategy. He also introduced a new path for the synergistic development of UBB and AI to help the industry accelerate the intelligent world to achieve – technological innovation and business creation.

The fourth industrial revolution is advancing rapidly thanks to AI, and AI is becoming a key driver of global economic growth. Widespread commercial use of AI is increasing, and new applications for personal use, business efficiency, and smart homes are transforming numerous markets. It also drives the modernization of communications networks in terms of capacity, latency and architecture.

In his speech, Wang said: “Huawei is driving innovation by focusing on two areas: UBB for AI and AI for UBB. The innovation we are doing at UBB for AI is based on ultra-wide bandwidth, deterministic low latency and network architecture. The network capacity improvements we achieve support higher quality AI development, which helps network operators grow their business. This innovation also focuses on AI for UBB. We apply AI to networks to improve network experiences, accelerate service delivery, and optimize network operations and maintenance. This helps network operators build highly autonomous networks.”

Last year, Huawei released its All Intelligence strategy to show “how to connect all things, model all applications, and calculate all decisions.” Huawei offers leading digital and intelligent infrastructure that provides computing, storage and transmission power for the industry. Huawei also uses its Pangu models to create advanced industry-specific models to support a variety of models and applications and help customers in various industries achieve intelligent transformation.

In the telecommunications industry, Huawei offers leading AI solutions that need to be supported by broadcast power. As critical infrastructure, UBB networks provide this type of performance that helps other industries become digital and intelligent more easily. For this reason, Huawei is pursuing two development paths for UBB networks: “UBB for AI” and “AI for UBB”.

UBB for AI: high-quality AI development

UBB 5.5G includes technological innovations at multiple network levels to support AI requirements.

For data center networks (DCN), Huawei offers a Dragonfly+ topology architecture and new DC-OXC technologies that help build large data centers.

For data center interconnect (DCI) networks, Huawei uses a series of innovative technologies such as 800G IP + optical networks, flexible IP service flow level scheduling and lossless transmission to make more efficient use of computing power in data centers.

For data center access (DCA) networks, Huawei’s OXC mesh network can significantly reduce network latency. Wi-Fi 7 and 50G PON technologies can provide the ubiquitous 10 Gigabit access needed for widespread adoption of AI by end users. In addition, FTTR is already being used by Huawei to create “smart hubs” and enable smart applications for many households.

Huawei’s Xinghe security gateway and hybrid ASON also guarantee resiliency across end-to-end networks for AI application connections.

These innovations significantly improve bandwidth, latency, availability and large-scale network capabilities and will help network operators differentiate in the smart era.

AI for UBB: highly autonomous networks

UBB networks are also becoming larger and handling more complex scenarios, prompting operators to seek new ways to improve operational and management efficiency and network autonomy. A promising method currently being researched is embedding AI directly into networks.

Huawei has developed an AI-powered O&M architecture for UBB networks using digital twins and its own Telecom Foundation Model. This architecture enables the creation of intelligent, role-oriented “copilots” and scenario-specific “agents” that automate on-site operations as well as remote maintenance and optimization necessary for the evolution toward Level 4 Autonomous Driving Networks (ADNs). .

Several leading network operators have successfully improved their network operation and maintenance efficiency by working with Huawei to commercially apply this architecture.

For residential broadband connections, ADNs can help the network self-optimize to ensure user experience and reduce churn by 57%.

When it comes to transmission networks, the efficiency of network planning and service deployment is crucial. ADNs can support self-scheduling and provisioning of services based on service level agreements instead of manual scheduling. This allows the time to provide services to be reduced from a month to a day.

Troubleshooting has always been a challenge when maintaining IP networks. ADNs can empower virtual workers to assist with troubleshooting, reducing network troubleshooting times by 50%.

At the end of his speech, Wang called on the entire UBB industry to actively embrace the intelligent era by promoting innovation in UBB 5.5G network technologies to be competitive in the long term. He also advocated for the industry-wide development of new intelligent services in addition to new network capacity, saying that new partnerships and business opportunities in AI applications will drive intelligent service transformation and new business growth.
