Around 50 million in 91 countries worldwide
Vienna (OTS) – Every year, the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert delights an audience of millions in Austria and around the world. The images from this year’s ORF broadcast of the top-class cultural event, which was conducted by Christian Thielemann for the second time this year, were sent linearly to 91 countries around the globe (including streaming via medici.tv there were around 200 countries). In Europe alone, an average of 18.3 million viewers in 38 countries did not want to miss the concert, as the recently published EBU paper “TV Audience Report: Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra New Year’s Concert” shows. The EBU presented results based on data from Glance and relevant partners. Compared to the previous year, a slight increase was recorded in the EBU area (2023: 18.1 million). Seen worldwide, the New Year’s Concert reaches around 50 million viewers annually, although a concrete overall evaluation is not available due to different measurement systems. The average reach of the TV broadcast in Austria was 1.129 million (peak value 1.226 million).
EBU top market shares in Iceland, Austria and Belgium
The concert had a market share of more than 20 percent in around half of the 38 European TV markets, and even more than 30 percent in eight markets. The top values were achieved in Iceland with 90 percent MA, followed by Austria with 58 percent MA and Belgium with 53 percent MA.
With an average of 26 percent MA across all markets, concert reach was highest among older people (60+). In comparison with the respective station average, however, the greatest effect was in the target group of children (up to 14 years of age): here the concert almost tripled the station’s market share – 12.7 percent for the concert versus 4.3 percent on average – a sign of this that the New Year’s concert is enjoyed in larger groups or families.
