The Leopold Museum is continuing its successful cooperation with the Vienna Chamber of Labor (AK WIEN). In the 2024/25 school year, the free art education programs can be carried out under the motto Youth discovered Vienna in 1900 will continue to be offered to Viennese students. The popular programs, which are always booked out quickly, were designed specifically for elementary school classes with a high proportion of children whose mother tongue is not German, as well as for students from middle schools, polytechnic schools and vocational schools who have difficult access to cultural offerings. The offers developed specifically for the project are tailored specifically to the needs and interests of children and young people of different age groups.
“Thanks to the generous support from AK Vienna as part of our long-standing cooperation, the continuous development of targeted mediation programs for children and young people is made possible. Under the proven, expert guidance of our art education team, connections are made to the current reality of the students’ lives against the (art) historical background of Vienna 1900. The different topics that are discussed with the young visitors in dialogue offer an ideal platform for stimulating discussions, for example on areas such as creativity and language, nature and migration, and self-perception in this multimedia age.”
Hans-Peter Wipplinger, director of the Leopold Museum
“We are starting the fifth year of our cooperation with great energy. Thanks to the successful collaboration with the Leopold Museum, the AK Vienna was able to enable 2,300 students and apprentices to participate free of charge in the Leopold Museum’s ‘Youth Discovers Vienna 1900’ programs in 2023/24 alone. The AK will work with the museum to offer new programs for the 2024/25 school year. It is very important to us to make it easier for people in Vienna to have access to art. We want to enrich the lives of children and young people in particular through these art and cultural experiences, without putting additional strain on parents’ wallets, which are often heavily strained by the high cost of living.”
Renate Anderl, President of the Vienna Chamber of Labor and the Federal Chamber of Labor

Dawn of modernity in Vienna around 1900 as the basis for today’s Vienna
Today’s European city of Vienna – the world in which children and young people live – was decisively shaped in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Starting point for the wide range of programs discovered by youth in Vienna in 1900 is the presentation Vienna 1900. Dawn of modernitywhich gives an exciting insight into the vibrant life of the art and culture capital around 125 years ago and includes works by the most important artists, designers and architects of that time, including Gustav Klimt, Broncia Koller-Pinell and Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann to Egon Schiele.
Using around 1,000 objects on several floors of the museum, the show offers an insight into the fascinating world of Vienna around 1900 that is unique in its density and complexity and allows you to immerse yourself in the incomparable atmosphere of the Danube metropolis. At the turn of the century it was the capital of both the high nobility and the liberal intellectuals, whose venues ranged from the magnificent Ringstrasse to endless slums. Here, with Zionism, the dream of the State of Israel arose, but also devastating anti-Semitic currents. Rigid conservatism met the onset of modernity. Splendor and misery, dream and reality are the opposite poles of an era that was characterized by a unique flowering of the arts and groundbreaking intellectual, social, technical and economic achievements.

BEAUTY VERSUS EXPRESSION
Dialogue tour including creative work in the exhibition, 90 min.
In Vienna around 1900, visionary artists set out to revolutionize art and reform life. They dreamed of a fairer and more sustainable way of life, driven by rapid scientific and technological innovations. Objects from the fields of painting, graphics, sculpture, photography, design and fashion give us an insight into Viennese modernism. We analyze the beauty of Art Nouveau works and empathize with expressionist compositions. In the studio we roll the dice for a task related to sustainability!
WHO AM I?
Dialogue tour including creative work in the exhibition, 90 min.
How many selfies do you take per week, per day? What do you share with your friends? Who do you follow – and why? Do you think all pictures on social media are real? Together we will discuss the tricks of artists who portrayed people 100 years ago. We pay attention not only to appearance, but also to facial expressions and gestures. Bring your cell phone!
TOTAL ARTWORK TODAY!
Dialogue tour including creative work in the exhibition, 90 min.
Every day we convey an image of ourselves to the public through our clothing. Fashion, crafts and design bring creativity into everyday life. We find inspiration for this in the “Gesamtkunstwerk Wien 1900”, in the lifestyle and in the artistic reform movements of the modern era. The examples range from works by the Wiener Werkstätte to fabrics by the Backhausen company, from dresses from Emilie Flöge’s fashion salon to expressive ceramics by female artists.
