Contemporary witness discussion with the “Mauthausen-Babys” as a sign against forgetting

Under the motto “Remember, warn, act – together for a strong democracy” Design the Mauthausen Committee Austria (MKÖ) and the Mauthausen concentration camp memorial year 2025 a variety of initiatives for the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Mauthausen concentration camp. A special highlight will take place on May 9, 2025 in Vienna: a contemporary witness discussion with the three so-called “Mauthausen-Babys”, accompanied by a book presentation.

Hana Berger-Moran, Mark Olsky and Eva Clarke were born under unimaginable conditions in the last days of the war. Her mothers – all Jews – survived Auschwitz, hid their pregnancies in front of the notorious camp doctor Josef Mengele and were deported to Mauthausen concentration camp in the last days of the war. There, or on the transport there, they gave birth to their children – with a birth weight of only around 1,500 grams.

“When you talk to these people, you understand how much strength, humanity and will to live. “Especially in the anniversary year of liberation, it is our responsibility to make these stories visible – for the present and especially for future generations. Memorial work is not a question of age. It is the basis for our democratic culture.”

Since their first meeting in 2010 at the Mauthausen concentration camp memorial, Hana, Mark and Eve have a close friendship. Their family history stands for many survival stories-and at the same time is an impressive testimony to the cruelty of the Nazi regime and the will to survive of the victims.

Barbara Glück, head of the Mauthausen concentration camp memorial, emphasized:
“As a memorial, we repeatedly call up to deal with the story. The individual biographies of the murdered and survivors are the focus of this work because they make the people visible behind the numbers and give an insight into the diversity of fates in the time of National Socialism. The common history of Hana, Eva and Mark is one of the few who, despite all the space, stands for unimaginable suffering from the three fulfilling life could grow up. “

The event on May 9th is part of this year’s activities under the guiding theme “Together for a never again”. In this context, the MKÖ invites all generations to deal with history, to take responsibility – and to set a clear sign against racism, anti -Semitism and extremism.
