foodwatch Austria presents a disgraceful prize today and demands that Bad Ischler stop the absurd pricing of simple salt in drops form
Vienna/Ebensee am Traunsee (OTS) – foodwatch Austria has called for voting for the “Advertising Infamy of the Year” for the second time this year. Now the winner has been decided: Bad Ischler is the clear winner of 2023. The company is advertising normal salt in drop form as an innovation for perfectly salted pasta water. For this one Marketing gimmick means you pay around 12 times more than for the conventional loose salt in the well-known paper packet. A nuisance for many consumers.
Today at 11:00 a.m., foodwatch Austria will hand over the certificate for the “Advertising Shame of the Year 2023” to the manufacturer Salinen Austria AG and call on the company to end the absurd pricing for this supposed luxury product.

That’s why the Bad Ischl pasta salt was nominated for the advertising insult of the year:
The two heads of foodwatch Austria, Lisa Kernegger and Heidi Porstner, comment on the decision: “Especially in times of massive food inflation, we find it absurd that a manufacturer sells normal salt at an exorbitant price and then advertises that it is an innovation. In our opinion this is outrageous.”
The actual price is also difficult for consumers to understand. The number of pieces is stated on the glass, but not the weight in grams. This makes price comparisons unnecessarily difficult.
“We want to talk to Bad Ischler about the absurdity of this product and the misleading aspect. The product is presented as something special. But it simply contains conventional salt pressed into drops form. Our demand is that Bad Ischler adjusts the price for pasta salt to that of conventional salt,” said Porstner and Kernegger.
That’s why foodwatch awards the advertising insult of the year
There is a lot going on in the food sector: excessive prices, fraudulent labels and misleading advertising promises make it difficult for consumers to shop. Time and again, manufacturers use excessive marketing or advertising measures to create expectations that are not met. Consumers can easily feel misled. However, both EU food law and Austrian food law state: Consumers must not be misled by advertising or the presentation of products. The reality is different. That’s why foodwatch regularly selects the… “Advertising insult of the month”. Five products will be nominated for “Advertising Infamy of the Year” in November.
In addition to the Bad Ischler pasta salt, the Eskimo Cremissimo vanilla ice cream, the Heinz tomato ketchup, the More Nutrition 2 calorie oil spray and the San Lucar mango passion fruit smoothie went into the running for the title “Advertising Disgrace of the Year 2023”. In an online vote, consumers were able to choose their favorite among the five annoying foods.
