“CONSUMER in school”: consumer education for young people

Project for students in grades 9 to 12 – registration possible until May 31, 2024

Vienna (OTS) How do I recognize sustainable products? Do I have the right to exchange my jeans? What do the nutritional information on food packaging mean and where are subscription traps lurking? Young people are already confronted with a wide variety of problems that can also be a challenge for adult consumers. To strengthen the consumer skills of young people, the Association for Consumer Information (VKI) together with the European Consumer Center (EVZ) Austria launched the “CONSUMER in school” project. The project is supported by the ministries responsible for consumer protection and education. Students in grades 9 to 12 have the opportunity – now for the 8th time – to deal with current consumer law issues in a practical manner over the course of a school year.

Teachers can register their class for the 2024/25 school year from now until May 31, 2024. All information about the school project as well as the opportunity to register is available on www.vki.at/konsument-in-der-schule.

“The ‘CONSUMER in school’ project specifically introduces students to the topics of consumer information and consumer protection, including topics such as healthy nutrition, harmful substances in cosmetics, sustainable consumption or consumer contracts, for example when ordering online or in-app purchases.” , explains VKI project manager Sabine Burghart. “We provide the teachers of the participating classes with working materials that are closely aligned with the curricula of various subjects and offer a variety of suggestions for use in class. In addition, all participants receive the test magazine KONSUMENT as training and review material.”

“As part of ‘CONSUMER in school’, students can also develop and submit their own projects on the subject of consumer protection,” adds Sabine Burghart. “The best projects will be rewarded, including in the form of grants to the class fund totaling 1,500 euros, and the VKI will also report on them in its magazine KONSUMENT.”

From now until May 31st at the latest, teachers have the opportunity to register their class for the 2024/25 school year. Participation is free. “CONSUMER in schools” is supported by the relevant ministries: the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection (BMSGPK) and the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF).
