A hint of Barcelona has been blowing through favorites for some time: Vienna’s first super grätzl thrives. Analogous to the super blocks in Spain, a urban open -air living room is currently being built in the heart of favorite between Gudrunstraße, Leebgasse, Quellenstraße and Neilreichgasse. The prevention of throughput traffic creates a lot of space for people and greening. The first part has already been completed, 44 trees were planted and 11 micro -open spaces and 70 green areas were created. The 2nd phase of construction is currently being redesigned – a pedestrian zone around the Herzgasse middle school is being created. “The 1st part of the super grätls presents itself in a new outfit, according to our motto ‘get out of the asphalt’ – with a lot of greening, cooling and space for the people who will benefit from the redesign this summer,” said planning city councilor Ulli Sima.
District head Marcus Franz is also pleased with the already very visible construction progress: “Currently you can already feel the fresh wind and the positive changes in the super grätzl. A number of intersection areas have been redesigned, many trees were set, the roadscape was improved and the quality of stay increased. With the 2nd section, the innovative overall concept” Supergrätzl “is now going to the final.”

The heart of the heart in the Herzgasse
The 2nd phase of construction has recently been designed, which is to be completed by the end of the year. A pedestrian zone around the Herzgasse middle school is created. It is designed with water features, destruction systems and light paving. This can seep away rainwater and contribute to cooling due to the subsequent evaporation. The sidewalk area in front of the municipal kindergarten in Gudrunstrasse was also widened and upgraded with seating furniture. In addition to the 47 existing trees, a total of 66 new trees and a total of 94 green spaces provide a lot of greening in the previously concrete streets. There will also be 59 new seating, 20 new water elements, including 6 water features, 8 new play equipment and 4 greened pergolas.
Diagonal filters ensure traffic calming – access to the Grätzl still possible
The core of the transformation to a super grätzl is the complete prevention of the passage traffic. With so -called diagonal filters, for example, car traffic at the intersections in the Supergrätzl is derived back to the main roads. The four intersections with the diagonal filters have already been redesigned. The Grätzl already benefits from the new traffic -calming regulation. Less noise, better air and more security are the immediately noticeable advantages for the residents who can also look forward to more space to walk, relax and linger. However, it remains possible. In line with the circular economy, the diagonal filters used in the Supergrätzl consist of converted concrete rings, which were once used as a waste container on the Danube Island.
