“There is hardly a day that does not take a minister on Austria’s binding no to the Mercosur Agreement. The SPÖ remains striking. The federal government does not play with open cards and keeps the population in uncertain,” says the agricultural spokeswoman for the Greens, Olga Voglauer, in response to today’s statements by Foreign Minister Beate Meiner, the ORF Press hour the controversial trade agreement with the South American Mercosur countries again supports and pronounces for a contract.
Voglauer recalls that the Austrian National Council already made a binding decision in 2019 to reject the Mercosur Agreement. This decision remains unchanged and is still binding: “Trade agreements are an important instrument. But they must not be at the expense of agriculture, social standards and our environment,” explains Voglauer.
“Not only the domestic agriculture and the environment would perceive great damage through this agreement. There is also a threat of hollowing out the rights of employees: inside that had to be fought hard for many decades. It is inexplicable that the SPÖ does not find any clear words here,” explains Voglauer and states: “It is irresponsible that the Federal Government does not represent a clear common line here.”
