“Consciously healthy”: Skin cancer – effective surgery through quick evaluation

On May 4th at 5:30 p.m. on ORF 2

Vienna (OTS) Dr. Christine Reiler will present the following articles in the ORF health magazine “Bewusst Gesundheit” on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. on ORF 2:

Skin cancer – effective surgery through quick evaluation

Intense sunlight, even at a young age, increases the risk of developing skin cancer. This only becomes apparent after years, usually with age, because the skin doesn’t forget. A Viennese woman also had to experience this. She was diagnosed with nonmelanoma skin cancer in February and had to have it surgically removed. In order to ensure that the malignant tissue was completely removed during the operation, the so-called frozen section was used. During the operation, a pathologist examines whether the removed tissue edges are tumor-free. This means those affected don’t have to wait for the results and follow-up operations are avoided. Sun allergies

Pleasant temperatures, more hours of sunshine and a rising UV index – the spring sun invites you to fill up our vitamin D tank and get a soft tan. However, the sun also poses risks because the skin is not yet used to it. Itching, redness and blisters can be signs of a sun allergy. A sun allergy is not an allergic reaction of the immune system, but a simplified umbrella term for sun-related skin reactions such as polymorphic photodermatosis, Mallorca acne or phototoxic dermatitis. Prim. Priv.-Doz. provides information about causes, effects and prophylaxis. Dr. Christian Posch, head of the dermatology department at the Hietzing Clinic.

Breathing properly with asthma

In Austria, around 500,000 people are affected by asthma. The causes of the permanent inflammation of the airways have not yet been fully clarified. In addition to a hereditary predisposition, various environmental influences and lifestyle seem to be responsible for increased sensitivity of the respiratory tract. Certain triggers such as plant pollen, animal hair, physical stress or infections lead to a narrowing of the bronchi – symptoms such as coughing, tightness in the chest or shortness of breath are the result. In addition to drug treatment, those affected can also learn breathing techniques that are intended to help them, especially in the event of sudden shortness of breath. It is important to practice these techniques regularly so that they can be used quickly in an emergency. Layout:

“Consciously healthy” tip on the topic of “allergic asthma”

In up to 80 percent of cases, allergies are likely to be the cause of asthma in adults. But not all allergy sufferers also develop asthma. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Siegfried Meryn explains which factors are crucial and what treatment options there are for allergic asthma.

Muscle cramps – prevent and relieve pain

The human body has around 650 muscles and basically every single one of them can contract unintentionally, i.e. cramp. Around 90 percent of young adults have felt a so-called muscle cramp, and half of those over 65 even experience it regularly. When it comes to muscle cramps, a distinction is made between cramps at night and cramps during exercise. The most common causes are tension, lack of nutrients, dehydration or side effects of medication. Depending on the cause, treatment is given. In most cases, a balanced diet, sufficient fluids and exercise offer rapid improvement. Layout:
