“Consciously healthy”: Short bowel syndrome – help with artificial hormones
Vienna (OTS) –

Dr. Christine Reiler will present the following articles in the ORF health magazine “Bewusst Gesundheit” on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. on ORF 2 and on ORF ON:

Short bowel syndrome – help with artificial hormone

In diseases such as Crohn’s disease or colon cancer, large parts of the intestine often have to be removed, which has massive consequences for the quality of life. Because the nutrients are no longer absorbed by a severely shortened intestine, artificial nutrition must be provided – otherwise there is a risk of serious deficiency symptoms. This so-called parenteral nutrition is often complex and stressful. “Consciously Healthy” reports on a drug that stimulates the intestinal villi of the remaining digestive tract to grow and can thus make life enormously easier for those affected. Psychosomatics

Emotions generally trigger physical reactions: joy makes us laugh, shame makes our faces blush, sadness leads to tears. If emotions are suppressed, it can cause discomfort and pain in the long term. Medicine speaks of psychosomatic complaints when the physical reactions become very strong due to psychological stress. The conversation with psychotherapist Karin Dreier is about the interaction between mind and body and how you can influence it positively.

“Consciously healthy” tip on the subject of diaphragmatic hernias

Around 30 percent of the Austrian population suffers from reflux and therefore from symptoms such as heartburn or pressure under the breastbone. A possible cause is a diaphragmatic hernia, which can cause part of the stomach to protrude into the chest cavity. A hiatal hernia, as the medical term goes, can be congenital, caused by obesity or with age. Univ.-Prof. explains which behavioral measures can be used to reduce the symptoms and when an operation is necessary. Dr. Siegfried Meryn.

Canker sores – this is how you get rid of the painful blisters

If there is a tingling and burning sensation in the mouth, canker sores are often the cause – not to be confused with cold sores. Possible causes for the mucosal changes have not been clarified. Canker sores are yellowish to whitish, round or oval and, depending on the type, can have a diameter of one millimeter to three centimeters. They either only occur once or recur again and again. Canker sores are harmless and not contagious, but they are annoying. Dr. Dr. reveals which home remedies can naturally accelerate the healing process and relieve pain. Christine Reiler.

Portrait of cyclist Franz-Josef Lässer

Franz-Josef Lässer is considered the red-white-red medal hope at the Paralympic Games in Paris (ORF 1 and ORF SPORT + report). After all, the cyclist won one bronze, two silver and one gold at the Para-Cycling Track World Championships in Rio de Janeiro in March. But the road to sport was a rocky one for him. Because of his disability, many people did not believe that Lässer could become a cyclist. But the Styrian shows his skills on the track, the street and off-road and also cuts a fine figure as a hobby breakdancer. Design: Lukas Osztovics
