Stroke at age 29

Strokes are one of the most common causes of death in Austria and the most common reason for permanent disability. The risk increases sharply with older age and an unhealthy lifestyle. Especially in cases of arteriosclerosis, deposits narrow the blood vessels and blood clots can form – sometimes with devastating consequences. Sometimes it also hits young people out of the blue, the causes are usually genetic, it can also be due to a cardiac arrhythmia or the cause is never clarified. A young woman from Upper Austria suffered such a fate and fought it with admirable consistency. Design: Christian Kugler

Smart patch for heart failure

In Austria, around 300,000 people are affected by heart failure. The heart muscle is so weakened that it can no longer pump enough blood through the body. One symptom is water retention in the tissue such as: B. the lungs, which can lead to shortness of breath. Regular checks are therefore an integral part of the treatment. As part of an international study, a telemedical plaster is being tested at the Favoriten Clinic in Vienna that measures this water retention using radio frequency waves. “The patch offers an innovative way to continuously monitor patients and react early to changes in their health,” said the head of the study, Dr. Diana Bonderman.

Biobank – tiny samples that give great hope

The biobank in Graz, one of the largest in all of Europe, keeps more than 22 million biological samples. The majority of these samples come from patients at the University Hospital of Graz. Shock-frozen at temperatures down to minus 196 degrees or fixed in formalin, the samples are made available to researchers in order to test new treatment approaches and better understand the course of the disease. By systematically analyzing these samples, new insights are gained that not only expand the foundations of medicine, but also offer hope for millions of people worldwide. Design: Denise Kracher

“Consciously healthy” tip: Traveling despite diabetes

Because proper planning is essential, especially for type 1 diabetics, so that you can enjoy a carefree time as undisturbed as possible. However, it is important that those affected think about a sufficient insulin supply for the duration of their vacation and store the insulin correctly, says Univ.-Prof . Dr. Siegfried Meryn.

Impressive – the power of nettle

The nettle is an unloved weed with unimagined potential in taste and health value. However, she knows how to defend her secret well. Equipped with stinging hairs and up to one and a half meters high, it is a painful memory for many. However, the nettle has its bad reputation undeservedly. Due to its ingredients, the medicinal plant is used primarily for urinary, kidney and joint problems as well as to stimulate metabolism and digestion. But nettle is also suitable as a culinary herb.
