“Consciously healthy”: alcohol consumption – what are the benefits of abstinent “Dry January”?

On January 13th at 5:30 p.m. on ORF 2

Vienna (OTS) Dr. Christine Reiler will present the following articles in the ORF health magazine “Bewusst Gesundheit” on Saturday, January 13, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. on ORF 2:

Alcoholics Anonymous

Mulled wine at Christmas, champagne on New Year’s Eve – for many people, alcohol is a given, and not just on special occasions, and it usually doesn’t stop at just a glass. What begins as a mood enhancer, relaxation aid or soul comforter can quickly become an addiction from which those affected find it difficult to break free. The self-help group “Alcoholics Anonymous” has been offering support since 1935. The aim of the regular meetings is to get and stay sober with the help of the group. Anonymity is part of the concept and serves self-protection both at the meetings and towards the public. In “Consciously Healthy,” an anonymous alcoholic talks about her “enemy, alcohol” and how, with the help of “Alcoholics Anonymous,” she managed to “give up the first drink” for more than 30 years. Dry January

According to the OECD, Austria is at the top when it comes to alcohol consumption with 11.1 liters per capita per year and an estimated 340,000 people are currently considered alcohol dependent. Almost one in four adults consumes alcohol to a level that is harmful to their health. But when does consumption become problematic? When should you be careful and how much is too much? For the New Year, many people plan to live healthier and drink less alcohol, but what’s the point of abstinent “Dry January”? Christine Reiler discusses these questions with Prim. Dr. Johannes Zeiler, specialist in psychiatry at the Anton Proksch Institute in Vienna.

Skin and nutrition

Impure skin, pimples and acne – a topic that not only concerns young people. Michaela Golfinopoulos suffers from oily skin and severe acne long after puberty. All the cleansing products, peelings and creams had no effect. Tablets from the dermatologist helped, but had severe side effects. Finally, the now 41-year-old went on a search and also tested different diets. Today she knows what is good for her skin. Design: Steffi Zupan

“Consciously healthy” tip: laryngitis

Hoarseness, coughing and difficulty swallowing are the first signs of laryngitis. There is also pain when swallowing and speaking and sometimes a fever occurs. The larynx is located at the entrance to the trachea and is involved in swallowing and voice formation. If inflammation occurs, the larynx lining and vocal cords swell. Intergeneratives Yoga

Yoga is now established worldwide and is also very popular in Austria. The philosophical teachings that come from India aim to unite body, mind and soul and thus strengthen human well-being. This type of self-dealing has existed for 3,000 years and has brought to light a wide variety of forms over time. Intergenerational yoga is offered in a senior citizens’ facility in Vienna-Penzing in order to bring the generations together. The participants are between two and 92 years old and embark on a journey into their “self” together. Design: Christoph Hofer
