Vocational pediatrician

Providing all children with quick and sustainable care is Dr. Sevinc Yildirim. The Turkish-born doctor draws her work and life philosophy from her own biography. As the child of a working-class family who first had to learn German at the age of twelve, she was able to study medicine with the help of a lot of support and fulfill a big dream. Now Dr. Yildirim give something back to all children and, above all, protect them from chronic illnesses. The statutory health insurance doctor manages this with her multicultural team of around 100 people in the children’s group practice at Cape10 in Vienna-Favoriten. Smombies – how smartphones are changing the way we walk

The cell phone accompanies us humans from morning to night, like a new body part. So-called smombies – smartphone zombies – fill entire streets, public transport or squares. Always keeping her eyes on one thing, the phone between her hands. But how is this trend changing our gait – and with what consequences? Research teams at the FH Campus Vienna examined this in more detail in a recent study. The result: If you concentrate on your smartphone while walking, you take smaller but wider steps. This leads to incorrect loading. The knees bend inwards and the strain on the joints increases. Even if this is minimal and long-term studies are lacking, scientists predict that this could lead to permanent damage over the years. Design: Nadine Maehs

Media addiction

Modern media not only makes our lives easier, but also poses a variety of dangers. One such thing is the so-called media addiction, which occurs when an excessive amount of time is invested in using media and other things are neglected. Not only psychological but also physical damage can be associated with such addiction. Psychotherapist Mag. Julia Dier explains the risks and frequencies of media addiction.

Training for heart failure

In Austria, around 300,000 people are affected by heart failure, also known as heart failure. This is one of the most common diseases worldwide. The heart muscle is weakened and is no longer able to adequately pump blood throughout the body. The main symptoms are shortness of breath, followed by rapid fatigue after activity, fatigue, dizziness or fluid retention in the legs. Heart failure usually occurs as a result of other diseases such as diabetes mellitus or after a heart attack. In addition to medication, regular physical exercise is an important component of therapy to improve the quality of life of those affected. Design: Marie-Christine Kremser

“Consciously healthy” tip on the topic of diverticulitis

Diverticula are protrusions on the intestinal wall that appear with age. Most of the time they do not cause any symptoms, but sometimes stool residue can accumulate in the sac-like protuberances on the intestinal wall and trigger inflammation. The consequences are severe abdominal pain, severe flatulence and increased body temperature. Univ.-Prof. provides information about the diagnosis and treatment options. Dr. Siegfried Meryn.
