Vienna (OTS) – Dr. Christine Reiler will present the following articles in the ORF health magazine “Bewusst Gesundheit” on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. on ORF 2:
Uveitis – eye inflammation caused by rheumatism
The diagnosis of rheumatic eye diseases is often difficult. On the one hand, they can occur at any time, often long before the joint disease manifests itself. Here, it is often only the examination or clarification of the uveitis that leads to the identification of the underlying systemic disease. A study shows that the eyes are affected in about a fifth of those affected with rheumatoid arthritis. Inflammation associated with rheumatic disease is often chronic and can cause permanent damage to the eye. Therefore, the diagnosis and timely treatment of both diseases is even more important. Pharmacogenetics
If medications and medicines don’t work or even cause side effects such as dizziness and nausea, it could be due to some kind of intolerance. Not everyone reacts the same way to active ingredients. The individual genetic makeup is to blame for this. In addition to the corresponding mechanism of action and the prescribed dose, the effectiveness of drugs also depends on the metabolism of the respective drug in the body. So-called pharmacogenetic blood tests can be used to determine how drugs work. Pharmacogenetics can help to choose the right drug with the right dose, prevent side effects and reduce the number of preparations.
Bacillus subtilis – microbe of the year
Humans are home to more than 30 trillion bacterial cells, most of them in the intestines. One of these microorganisms is Bacillus subtilis, which was voted “Microbe of the Year” this year due to its outstanding abilities. The rod-shaped bacterium plays a crucial role in the human microbiome and ensures a balanced intestinal flora. But the superpowers of Bacillus subtilis also work outside the body. The bacterium is used for moistening in cosmetics as well as in the construction industry – small aging cracks in the concrete are closed again by the microbes. Design: Vroni Brix
“Consciously healthy” tip: Drink enough
A person can go about three weeks without eating, but only three days without drinking. Regular and adequate fluid intake is important for kidney function, blood pressure, digestion and regulation of body temperature. But how much is enough and what counts as liquid? This question is answered by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Siegfried Meryn.
Facial training – with muscle strength against wrinkles
Tired eyes, double chin and another new wrinkle. More and more people in Austria are going under the knife or having a nerve agent injected to look flawless. However, this doesn’t have to be the case, says a physiotherapist from Vorarlberg. Our body also consists of 650 muscles and 50 of them are in our face. Daily training between the eyes, nose, mouth and chin should also bring the face back into shape and help it look radiant. Design: Vroni Brix
