“Consciously healthy” about newborn screening and 50 years of mother-child passport

On February 24th at 5:30 p.m. on ORF 2

Vienna (OTS) Dr. Christine Reiler will present the following articles in the ORF health magazine “Bewusst Gesundheit” on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. on ORF 2:

Detective work – tracking down rare diseases

February 29th is International Rare Disease Day. Even if there are only isolated cases of some diseases in Austria, they are not that rare as a group: they affect around five percent of the population. A disease is considered rare if it affects fewer than one in 2,000 people. Small or large changes in a person’s genetic makeup can lead to such a rare disease. By the time a diagnosis is made, many of those affected have already completed an odyssey. In Styria, experts from the University Hospital and MedUni Graz work together to get to the bottom of extremely rare diseases. Design: Denise Kracher

Newborn screening

For 60 years now, newborns in Austria have been examined for rare diseases using a screening program. All it takes is a prick in the heel and a drop of blood. As part of this health program, serious illnesses are discovered in 80 to 100 children every year and can be treated in the best possible way through early detection. Univ.-Prof. speaks about newborn screening in Austria. Mag. Markus Hengstschläger, head of the Center for Pathobiochemistry and Genetics at MedUni Vienna, where these studies are carried out centrally for the whole of Austria.

High sensitivity

Bright lights, a scratchy sweater or an oppressive mood in the room – highly sensitive people perceive sensory impressions and feelings very intensively. This can be overwhelming in everyday life and can also promote mental illness. The phenomenon of high sensitivity has not yet been extensively researched, but 15 to 20 percent of the population are said to be particularly sensitive. Design: Christoph Hofer

“Consciously healthy” tip: 50 years of the mother-child pass

Around 80,000 children are born in Austria every year and from the start of pregnancy they and their mother are accompanied by the mother-child pass. The examination program was introduced 50 years ago to reduce the high infant mortality rate; the focus now is on the early detection of abnormal development and illnesses in children. This year the mother-child pass will become a parent-child pass, meaning the yellow booklet will soon be a thing of the past and will be replaced by a digital pass. The range of examinations is also being expanded, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Siegfried Meryn.

Wall Pilates – exercises for at home

A sport that takes little time, can be done anywhere, strengthens the deep muscles and shapes the body – that’s what wall pilates promises. In this type of Pilates, the wall serves as an aid and support and is therefore well suited for beginners. The wall can also be used as resistance and thus enhance your training. “Consciously Healthy” took a closer look at how effective wall Pilates is and for whom this trend sport is suitable.
