“Consciously Healthy” about, among other things, possible long-term consequences of benzodiazepines

On May 18th at 5:30 p.m. on ORF 2

Vienna (OTS) Dr. Christine Reiler will present the following articles in the ORF health magazine “Bewusst Gesundheit” on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. on ORF 2:

Stroke prevention – monitor blood pressure digitally

In Tyrol, high blood pressure patients receive special care. To ensure that their dangerous but imperceptible illness does not worsen, they are digitally monitored using smartphones. Not only are the blood pressure readings sent to the carers every day, but also the number of steps taken. Because high blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for heart attacks and strokes – this applies even more to women than to men. Design: Christian Kugler

Benzodiazepines – trendy drug among young people

When treating anxiety, sleep disorders and muscle tension, sleeping pills or sedatives such as benzodiazepines, which have a high addictive potential, are often prescribed. According to the Ministry of Health, 140,000 people in Austria are dependent on such tranquilizers. In recent years, more and more young people have been turning to so-called benzos to get into a state of intoxication. However, they sometimes underestimate how quickly an addiction can develop and do not realize that combining it with other means can be fatal. But drug abuse poses a danger not only to young people, but also to old age, as benzodiazepines are broken down more slowly by older people. Univ.-Prof. answers what possible long-term consequences can occur and why withdrawal is particularly lengthy and difficult. Dr. Gabriele Fischer, head of addiction therapy at MedUni Vienna, in conversation.

Cryosurgery – using cold to combat breast cancer

Research into the use of extreme cold against tumor diseases has been carried out for more than 30 years. The method has already been established for carcinomas of the kidney and prostate and breast cancer can also be successfully treated with cryotherapy or cryosurgery. Under ultrasound control, a biopsy needle is advanced to the tumor, the tip of which is cooled to minus 186 degrees Celsius. In this way, the cancer cells can be killed in a targeted manner. This method is particularly suitable for older patients who cannot tolerate general anesthesia well. Design: Christian Kugler

“Consciously healthy” tip on the subject of polyneuropathy

There are numerous diseases such as diabetes, alcoholism or vitamin B12 deficiency, but also some medications that can damage the nerves. Especially after radiation and chemotherapy, those affected often suffer from what is known as neuropathy. At the beginning, this nerve damage is usually noticeable as a tingling sensation in the hands and feet or as a feeling of numbness. Univ.-Prof. explains how this disease is treated. Dr. Siegfried Meryn.

Calisthenics – trendy outdoor sport: strenuous but healthy

Human flag, planche, back lever – these are the names of popular calisthenics exercises. The name comes from Greek, means “beautiful strength” and is basically strength training with your own body weight. This trend sport comes from the USA and also has an ever-growing community in Austria. The sport is not new, as many exercises are known as standard elements in gymnastics on horizontal bars or rings. What is new, however, is the location of the training: instead of the gym, parks and playgrounds are used for the acrobatic exercises. Design: Steffi Zupan
