The winners of the 2024/2025 mobile network test have been determined: Telekom took first place in Germany, Magenta in Austria and Swisscom in Switzerland. This is the result of the renowned network test that the media brand connect has had carried out by the benchmarking specialist umlaut for around 21 years. This year, a great deal of effort was once again used to determine which network operators are leaders in Germany, Austria and Switzerland using objective and customer-oriented test procedures.
Telekom wins in Germany
Telekom achieved overall victory in Germany for the fourteenth time in a row and, like last year, received the overall grade of “outstanding”. The provider achieved 970 out of 1,000 possible points and is clearly ahead in all three test disciplines: language, data and crowdsourcing. With 924 points and the grade “very good”, Vodafone follows and achieved second place in all test disciplines. Telefónica comes in third place, showing the greatest improvement among the German operators by 14 to 909 points.
Magenta wins in Austria
Magenta achieved overall victory in Austria for the seventh time in a row. The provider achieved 975 out of 1,000 possible points and thus the grade “outstanding”. The test winner is ahead in all three test disciplines: language, data and crowdsourcing. A1 follows with 954 points and also the grade “outstanding”. In many test disciplines, the provider is almost on a par with Magenta. Drei received the grade “very good” and third place with 939 points. At the same time, the provider showed the greatest improvement in the DACH region with an increase of 24 points compared to the previous year.
Swisscom wins in Switzerland
For the seventh time in a row, Swisscom achieved overall victory in Switzerland. The provider achieved 977 out of 1,000 possible points and thus the grade “outstanding”. Swisscom is a leader in the data and crowdsourcing testing disciplines. With 973 points and the grade “outstanding”, Sunrise is only 5 points behind Swisscom. In the language discipline, Sunrise is one point ahead of Swisscom; In the data rating, the provider is on a par with the first place. With 952 points, Salt also received the grade “outstanding”. In crowdsourcing, the provider is moving close to second-place Sunrise, but in voice and data the gap remains somewhat larger despite top performance.
Hannes Rügheimer, connect author, sums up: “Congratulations to all of the network operators tested – because every one of them has either improved or at least essentially maintained their previous year’s result. Given growing data traffic and rising energy costs, this is by no means a given. In the seventh year As a result, we see a familiar ranking in Austria, Germany and Switzerland in our demanding mobile phone test. We are continually expanding our test methodology and tightening the evaluation keys Year after year, the good results show that every provider is continually improving its network.”
The telephony and data measurements were carried out using drive tests in large and small cities as well as on connecting roads. They were supplemented by walk tests in zones with heavy public traffic – such as train stations, airports, cafés, museums and public transport. The walk tests also included journeys on local and long-distance rail routes. The testers drove through 23 large and 25 small cities in Germany from October 14, 2024 to October 25, 2024 and covered 11,030 kilometers. In Austria they drove through 15 large and 15 small towns from October 3rd, 2024 to October 12th, 2024 and covered around 5,750 kilometers. And in Switzerland, the testers drove through 24 large cities and 17 small towns from October 15, 2024 to October 26, 2024, covering 6,230 kilometers. There were also walk tests: in eleven cities in Germany, in six cities in Austria and in eight cities in Switzerland. Around 16.4 million inhabitants in Germany were covered, which corresponds to around 19.7 percent of the German population. In Austria, a total of around 3.4 million residents were covered, around 37.5 percent of the population. The measurement campaign in Switzerland covered around 2.3 million inhabitants, which corresponds to 25.7 percent of the population. For the crowdsourcing analyses, around 16.5 billion individual measurements were analyzed in Germany from the beginning of May to mid-October 2024, around 453 million samples in Austria and around 722 million samples in Switzerland.
