Congress shows both successes and major challenges in the fight against HIV

From March 20 to 22, 2025, the German-Austrian AIDS Congress (Döak 2025) will take place in the German-speaking area in the Vienna Hofburg. On three days, experts from medicine and research as well as from prevention and psychosocial subject areas discuss the current challenges in the fight against HIV. Successes and milestones achieved, but also urgently needed steps to end the HIV epidemic are shown.

Thanks to enormous medical progress, HIV is now a well -treated chronic illness with a high level of life expectancy. In addition, it has been proven that effective HIV therapy can prevent transmissions. Despite these achievements, the global goals set for 2025 were not achieved to end the epidemic. The struggle against HIV is characterized by its oppositeness: the gap between achieved or foreseeable success and outstanding or lack of efforts does not seem to be concluded.

Congress opening illustrates opposites

Already the opening of the congress on Thursday, March 20, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in the ballroom of the Vienna Hofburg illustrates this opposition and illustrates both challenges and success stories.

In terms of content, the Döak 2025 by Dr. Pamela Rendi-Wagner, director of the ECDC (European Center for Prevention and Convention), opened. Under the title “HIV/AIDS in 2025 – Insights from a European Perspective”, she shows existing hurdles in addition to the great progress in Europe and thus addresses stigmatization and discrimination.

The following honors of the two medical professional societies (Austrian and German AIDS Society) present outstanding research and thus recent promising developments from medicine and science.

There are also special attention to activities related to the media presence of HIV. The German AIDS Foundation gives its renowned Media Prize HIV/AIDS in the opening of the Döak 2025. It is characterized by three outstanding current media posts and an HIV ambassador. Laudator is the internationally known actress and moderator Annabelle Mandeng.

Program outlines future visions from all perspectives

The top -class congress program with almost 70 individual events and over 250 experts illuminates the wide range of the HIV/AIDS topic. It underlines interdisciplinary cooperation and promotes exchange across all professional groups. Through the active integration of people with HIV in all areas of the congress, the Döak 2025 enables discussion about possible future visions from all perspectives.

Congress President Dr. Alexander Zoufaly summarizes: “Large milestones have been reached, but the trip is far from over. We are at crucial turning points in both therapy and prevention.”
