Vienna (OTS) – It was a long conflict that began in 2015. At that time, Maximilian Mayr-Melnhof released breeding ducks from factory farming in his hunting gate in the middle of the bird sanctuary in order to organize shooting events. The empty shotgun shells were left lying in the middle of the nature reserve. In the hunting area, which was declared a Natura 2000 area by the EU in 1999, hundreds of wild boars and fallow deer were shot every year, the former in large groups Drive hunts in autumn. The VGT stormed against this abuse of animals and nature, and against the illegal use of this high-quality protected area. Water samples showed that the ponds in the gate were contaminated. Mayr-Melnhof has until 2025 to reduce the number of farmed wild animals to a number that is compatible with nature.
A local inspection by the VGT now confirms that the animal population has actually been significantly reduced. While in the past you would encounter masses of wild boar and fallow deer at every turn, this is no longer the case today. The large feeding areas are no longer equipped and have even been completely removed. State Councilor Schwaiger had always claimed that unfortunately it was not possible to reduce the number of game animals in the hunting gate; that was technically impossible, which is why the hunting gate could not be dismantled and the fence could not be removed. As soon as the gate is sold, it’s apparently already possible.
VGT chairman DDr. Martin Balluch said: “It was clear to Mayr-Melnhof that he would not come to his senses when it came to animal and nature conservation on his own. Someone who proudly says that his daughter wants a rabbit to be shot for her 10th birthday is coming to life another star. My daughters would never dream of something like that.
