Climate thriller: Crime novel by Michael Lüders: Big business has priority

Even if you can hardly believe it when you look at the (still) ice-covered fjords and mountain landscapes in Greenland, even in this idyll the temperatures have risen by more than eight degrees a month.

“The only place where neither the Russians nor anyone else has managed to eavesdrop on us is this bathroom.” So we see Berit, the boss of E 39, on the toilet bowl and her two agents, Sophie and Harald, on that Sit on the edge of the bathtub. “Their cell phones were wrapped in silver foil in an office drawer…” The small special unit has at least managed to protect the Norwegian Prime Minister from the dark machinations of her finance minister. They discovered the American-Russian connections of a shady shipping company – and personally survived many a dangerous situation. In this respect, “Radient Ice” by Michael Lüders still offers action tension, just as a thriller should.

»The following story is fictional. The historical references, however, are not.” With this announcement, the author opens up a much greater arc of tension. Many reading this book may not even have known that there were and are US military bases in Greenland and that the Inuit were driven out and the environment was polluted. This should be denounced at a conference in Reykjavik, which also involves legally forcing Norway’s exit from oil exploration around Svalbard. Environmental activists like Brigitta Arnósdóttir and Natan Hammond are speaking out as the voice of the Inuit. Brigitta has just survived the crash of a helicopter carrying several men with cancer who are now no longer able to attend the conference. »They wanted to tell what happened to them in Greenland in 1968. When they were irradiated there.” Was the accident intentional to prevent them from doing so?

The book title “Radiant Ice” refers to the crash of a US B-52 bomber on January 21, 1958. Four hydrogen bombs were on board. When they hit the surface of the water, the explosive charges were triggered and the surrounding area was contaminated. »Global warming? Big business takes precedence,” sighs Natan Hammond. Through him and his father Aqqaluk, Michael Lüders brings the ancient knowledge of the Inuit into the book. We learn what Qideq means – the unity of body, soul and consciousness. »That is the biggest challenge. To become one with the past as well as the future in order to fill the present with life. A life that is not limited to added value and profit at the expense of the planet.«
