Since the beginning of the year, around 200 arrests of climate activists have been made – severe penalties for disruptive actions – continued consistent police intervention
Vienna (OTS) – Between January 1 and May 9, 2024, around 200 arrests were made in various illegal climate actions. Both the people arrested and the other participants in these disruptive actions face severe penalties due to the offenses committed.
Since the beginning of 2024, almost 200 arrests have been made in such disruptive actions. On May 10, 2024 alone, 31 people were arrested during a disruptive operation in Vienna, bringing the total to 975 arrests of climate activists since the beginning of last year.
In order to maintain public order and safety, disruptive demonstrations that cause significant disruption are regularly prohibited by the authorities and stopped by the police. The focus of the security executive who intervenes is on ending the disruption as quickly as possible.
However, where there is little or no obstruction, the assembly authorities usually do not stop the actions, which means that the police do not have to intervene. Regardless, in each of these incidents, a large number of administrative charges are filed against everyone involved.
