City escape: Please avoid London, says Ed Sheeran

The rich and their worries are always so cute and stupid. Ed Sheeran, whose single concert brings the organizers seven million euros, is supposed to pay himself monthly pocket money of 1,500 euros. Why not when you’ve already broken all sorts of sales records in a short career (he’s 33)?

Sheeran thinks in small-small terms, probably to ground himself somehow. This is also the secret of the success of his music, which could be described as “soft pop”. A titan of the trivial, who, unlike Justin Bieber, doesn’t sing like a baby boy, but actually has a good voice and composes his songs himself – and inoculates them with exquisite harmlessness against every kind of claim and knowledge. So successful that it makes you dizzy.

Maybe Sheeran himself, who likes to appear as calming as his songs. Now, on US comedian Theo Von’s podcast, he advised against visiting London because the city is “dodgy.” You can get mugged anywhere there, especially if you walk around with a Louis Vuitton bag, believes Sheeran, who grew up in the countryside on England’s east coast, where he still lives. On six hectares in an everything-at-once property, with its own recording studio, swimming pool and pub.

Of course that costs more than 1500 euros. He says he generally avoids London. There are no “good” or “bad” neighborhoods there, they are all equally bad. A remarkable formulation for the gentrified British capital, one of the most expensive areas in the world. Sheeran is not talking about the money that threatens people there and deprives them of their homes because it has to “work”, has to be invested or simply likes to show what it can do, but rather that people would threaten the money. That’s why his songs are so otherworldly.
