“Katharina Copony’s film work pushed the boundaries of documentary and was characterized by an intensive examination of space and sound: she worked and explored the tensions between inside and outside, sound and voice, said and unsaid, the obvious and the hidden,” says Wiens City Councilor for Culture Veronica Kaup-Hasler expressed her deep sadness today at the much too early loss of the filmmaker.
“With ‘In der Kaserne’ she created a personal work somewhere between a feature film and a documentary, a haunting portrait in which she placed her personal family history in southern Styria in a universal context. These border crossings were also invitations to the audience to look beyond the edge of the familiar and to engage with the spaces in between that she created with great sensitivity.
My sincere condolences go out to Katharina Copony’s family and relatives, her companions and friends,” concluded Kaup-Hasler.
Katharina Copony has been honored with numerous awards, such as the “Outstanding Artist Award” for film (documentary) from the Republic of Austria in 2012. In December 2019 she was honored with a showcase by the Filmarchiv Austria.
