The cinema year 2023 was characterized by record-breaking blockbusters – together with successful domestic productions, they contributed to cinema culture making a cinematic comeback after the previous pandemic years. The long-awaited opening of the Cineplexx Westfield SCS followed in December, which not only marked the end of an extraordinary cinema year, but also provided a powerful impulse for the start of the new year. At the program presentation for the 2024 cinema year, Cineplexx not only gave an outlook on films that will premiere this year, but also on cinema trends in 2024.
As the first completely measure-free cinema year since Covid, 2023 has exceeded all expectations and turned out to be a year full of records with great film releases. With an unprecedented response to “Barbie”, “Oppenheimer”, “Mission: Impossible 7” and “Rehragout-Rendezvous”, the Austrian cinema summer experienced a record-breaking wave of success. Austrian productions were also convincing in 2023: Right from the start, “Greece” took the audience’s hearts by storm. In the first quarter of 2023, Cineplexx even recorded over half a million visitors to Austrian films – a top result. “Pulled Pork” and the arthouse crossover production “A Whole Life” also worked very well and are important drivers for other domestic productions.
Action, fun and fantasy: The film highlights of 2024
With this dynamic and anticipation, Cineplexx is looking forward to a year rich in cinematic highlights. Starting off strong with “Out of the Pond” and “Wonka”, both of which were released in cinemas shortly before Christmas, great films await cinema fans in the coming months. These include “Mean Girls – The Girls Club”, “Dune: Part Two”, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”, the Fack ju Göhte spin-off “Chantal in Fairytale Land”, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”, “Planet der Apes – New Kingdom”, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”, “Inside Out 2” as well as “Transformers One”, “Smile 2”, “Joker: Folie à Deux”, “Mufasa: The Lion King” and many more .
Music and culture in the cinema – it’s a match!
Taylor Swift, Coldplay, BTS and Billie Eilish are prominent examples of artists who have already had great success on the Austrian cinema screen with their concert films. In January 2024, Queen joined this list with QUEEN ROCK MONTREAL presented by IMAX®.
Other cultural highlights include the live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The 2023/24 MET season is in full swing. First-class productions of Bizet’s “Carmen” and Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette”, through Verdi’s “La Forza Del Destino” and the season finale with Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly” are still waiting until mid-May. In September, after a short summer break, advance sales for the 2024/25 season will start again.
Cinema for the whole family
Families will also be offered lots of games, fun and action in 2024. The “Disney Channel Participatory Cinema” starts again in February, where children can sing along loudly, dance, clap and do puzzles for an hour. At Easter, people dance with the Easter Bunny at the Hoppel Disco and the SuperCinema Summer also promises many surprises. Of course, the new cinema year also has a lot to offer film-wise for younger cinema fans: “The Chaos Sisters and Penguin Paul”, “Butterfly Tale”, “Fireman Sam – Animal Heroes”, “Kung Fu Panda 4”, “Garfield – An Extra Portion”. Adventure”, “Despicable Me 4” and much more.
Trends are redefining the cinema experience
In recent years there has been increasing enthusiasm and demand for OV (original version) and OmU (original version with subtitles) as well as for premium formats such as IMAX®, Dolby Cinema and MX4D among Cineplexx guests – a clear signal of the offer in these areas to be expanded accordingly. The most recent example of this is the Cineplexx Westfield SCS, the most modern cinema in Austria, which only opened in December 2023. Here, cinephiles will find a top-class cinema experience – whether seat service in the new suites, great emotions on the IMAX® screen or unique moments in the world’s first UNIQUE hall: “Cinema goes far beyond watching a film. Cinema as an event location and with gastronomy
With event organization from a single source, the Cineplexx cinemas are suitable for a wide variety of events. The new Cineplexx Westfield SCS in particular is breaking new ground here with the newly created suites, halls with seating service and its own event space. The bar “ROSSO by l’autentico”, run together with the award-winning Italian restaurant l’autentico, has been generating enthusiasm since it opened. That’s why from Friday, January 26th, ROSSO welcomes not only cinema guests, but also everyone who wants to treat themselves to culinary delights between shopping, entertainment or work during the cinema opening hours.
