The city of Vienna Marketing GmbH, together with the Vienna events authority MA 36 and the Vienna police, has developed a comprehensive security concept for the Christmas market, which was carefully planned long before the market began. “This concept takes all eventualities into account and guarantees safe implementation. “In addition, we are in constant communication with the security authorities in order to be able to react quickly to unforeseen developments,” explains SPÖ local councilor and police security spokesman Christian Hursky.
Security through targeted measures
The 78 bollards at the entrances to the town hall square, which have been installed for years, make a crucial contribution to security. These robust barriers specifically prevent hazards from vehicles. “The town hall square in particular is secured in an exemplary manner and there is no reason to panic. It’s always good to be careful, but safety is guaranteed,” said Hursky.
Comprehensive deployment and monitoring
The Vienna Christmas Market team ensures compliance with safety regulations throughout opening hours. Flows of people are continuously monitored in order to be able to react quickly to possible exceeding of the approved number of visitors.
A special thank you goes to the Vienna police, who are present at the Christmas markets both in uniform and in plain clothes. “This visible and invisible presence gives visitors additional security and shows: Vienna makes no compromises when it comes to protecting its citizens,” emphasizes Hursky.
Unfounded criticism exposed
Hursky firmly rejects allegations based on alleged security deficiencies. “The press release makes several references to unnamed ‘experts’ and ‘professionals’, which massively questions the credibility of these claims. Anyone who expresses serious concerns should provide concrete facts and evidence. Instead, a diffuse threat is conjured up that corresponds neither to reality nor to professional planning,” criticizes Hursky.
“We in Vienna stand shoulder to shoulder for safety and quality of life”
Hursky concludes: “Vienna is and remains one of the most livable cities in the world – even during Advent. Our security experts and the executive ensure that the Viennese and our guests can enjoy the Christmas atmosphere without any worries. We in Vienna stand shoulder to shoulder for security, quality of life and solidarity.”
