China’s culture celebrated in Brussels

The opening ceremony of “An Encounter with Chinese Culture: Jiangsu Week of the Grand Canal Culture” took place in Brussels on Tuesday. This event of the Chinese province of Jiangsu was received very positively by both the residents and by cultural experts.

As part of a series of events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relationships between China and the European Union in 2025, this event will be organized jointly by the representation of China at the EU, the information office of the Province of Jiangsu and the Jiangsu International Culture Association.

During the opening ceremony, the sand artist He Liping showed the audience how she drew an approximately eight meter long sand picture on site. On the left side, Belgium is depicted with the fairytale charm of Bruges, with red tower falcons, blossoming poppy flowers, smurfs on the atom, Tim and Struppi on the Grand Place and EU notes. On the right side, the channel culture shapes the cities of Changzhou and Wuxi in the province of Jiangsu, where huge panda bears and cherry blossoms surround old bridges.

Cao Weiping, a tea nack artist from Changzhou, was present at the opening ceremony and the subsequent events and informed the audience about the manufacturing methods of such snacks.

“Teesnacks come from the Tang dynasty (618–907) when drinking tea was so popular with both intellectual and simple people that snacks were served naturally. The Spanish violinist Marina Martin visited the exhibition “Millennia-Old Canal, Charm of Jiangsu” and showed interest in the exhibited Chinese instruments, including the Eru, a traditional musical instrument.
