Children’s friends present booklet “Talking about language”

For over 8 years, the Vienna Children’s Friends have been actively promoting language development in kindergartens and schools with their INTERREG language projects. During this time, they have not only kept their finger on the pulse of the times, but also found well-founded answers to the central question: What do kindergarten children need linguistically in order to successfully master German as a second language? In view of the fact that 15,613 students at public elementary schools in Vienna have an AO status, i.e. an increased need for German language support (= 22% of the students, more than half of them born in Austria), the Kinderfreunde have a solution for this found a very current topic.

“It is primarily the educators who know how to specifically support multilingual children,” emphasizes NRAbg. Christian Oxonitsch, Chairman of the Vienna Children’s Friends. The children’s friends have taken on this challenge with various training courses and a variety of materials.

Language support resources

Resources already developed include the handbook for promoting institutional multilingualism and the language-sensitive MINT box. Now they are pleased to be able to present another valuable language material: the booklet “Talking about language”. “This is the key to successful language support!” says Oxonitsch.

The booklet offers easy-to-read material to promote different language levels in monolingual and multilingual children, combining the latest language materials and practical recommendations. “We want to bring theory and practice together in an application-oriented way so that language training can be seamlessly integrated into everyday kindergarten life,” explains Alexandra Fischer.
