Chernobyl
On April 26, 1986, a catastrophe occurred in reactor unit 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine. On the seven-level international rating scale for nuclear events, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster was the first event to be classified in the highest category of catastrophic accident (INES 7). It is the most serious accident in the history of the peaceful use of nuclear energy – alongside the reactor explosion in Fukushima in 2011 as a result of an earthquake.
