Chancellor Christian Stocker today found out about the latest digital production and regional raw material securing in the RHI Magnesita plant Radenthein. The visit underlines the importance of domestic critical raw materials such as magnesite for the upcoming industrial strategy. The Chancellor was accompanied by ÖVP General Secretary Nico Marchetti, Federal Managing Director Dominik Ramusch, State Councilor Martin Gruber and Mayor Michael Maier.
“Radenthein impressively shows how raw material security, digitization and environmental protection can be successfully connected to keeping each other in order to maintain value creation in the country, secure jobs and at the same time strengthen Europe. Must of strategic importance is a clear advantage.
– Christian Stocker, Austrian Chancellor
“Magnesite is the material behind the materials-without it no wind turbine, no battery, no green steel. Our works in Austria prove that responsible mining, circular economy and high-tech production are possible in Europe.”
– Rajah Jayendran, CTo Rhi Magnesita
A week earlier, Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler had also visited the work in Radenthein and got an idea of the company’s commitment in the areas of health and security as well as personnel development and the associated industrial growth. Rhi Magnesita is currently going through the most comprehensive transformation of its history in the field of occupational safety – for the benefit of all employees.
Digital Fire Fireworks Radenhein
The work in Radenthein is the first firestry with fully integrated Manufacturing Execution System (MES), AI-based quality control and digital twin of all processes.
Performance data:
- Production capacity: ≈ 140,000 t/year
- Article / recipes:> 15,000 /> 500
- Industrial customers / countries:> 700/40 +
- Employees: ≈ 330 at the location
- Over 1,000 trained apprentices since the company was founded in 1908
75,000 t of raw magnitude from the Millstätter Alpe are transported to the factory by cable car and refined to cable car for feeding materials and soil renovation. For the fire festival lines, Radenthein obtains additional high -pure Magnesia from other Austrian deposits. This creates precisely spine and magnesia stones, which protect electrical light arch stoves in Germany, glass tubs in Spain and copper melting in Canada.
Magnesite: Foundation of modern high -temperature processes
Magnesite is the basis for a large part of fireplace products that protect stoves and reactors at temperatures above 1,200 ° C. Without it there would be no climate-neutral steel, no low-CO₂ cement, no energy-efficient glass and no battery metals. However, Europe imports most of its needs from China, which controls around two thirds of world production – Austrian deposits are therefore a rare European opposite pole and an important growth engine. A recording of Magnesite/Magnesia in the EU list of critical and strategic raw materials would mean new well-paid jobs in rural areas and investments in Austria.
Symbolic end
At the end of the visit, Rhi Magnesita presented the Chancellor a magnesite cube with the engraving
“Magnesite – critical for Europe · Radenthein, July 30, 2025”.
He stands for the common goal of adding magnesite to the EU raw material list as a strategic mineral-a step that Great Britain and Turkey have already taken.
