Beijing, March 21, 2024 (ots/PRNewswire) – Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Changsha, the capital of central China’s Hunan Province, on Monday.
During the visit, Xi, who is also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, briefed on local efforts to accelerate the development of new quality production forces and promote high-level opening-up.
New quality production staff tailored to local conditions
The Hunan inspection tour is considered Xi’s first on-site guidance to accelerate the development of new quality production forces according to local conditions.
In Changsha, he visited BASF Shanshan Battery Materials Co., Ltd, a joint venture founded in 2021 by the German company BASF and the Chinese company Shanshan.
The company is a global leader in lithium battery materials, and its products are widely used in high-tech fields, including electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage power plants.
Xi’s trip to Hunan came after the annual meetings of the National People’s Congress, China’s top legislative body, and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the country’s top political advisory body, in early March, where he held a consultation with National People’s Congress deputies from the delegation of Jiangsu Province emphasized the importance of accelerating the development of new, high-quality productive forces tailored to local conditions.
During the consultations, he called on the municipalities to take into account their own resources, industrial bases and scientific research conditions and to specifically promote the development of new industries, new models and new growth engines. He also urged them to use new technologies to transform and improve traditional industries into high-quality, smart and environmentally friendly industries.
Development at a high level
This is Xi’s fourth inspection trip to Hunan. His four trips to the province coincided with important stages in the country’s renewal efforts.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and it is crucial for the country to realize the goals and objectives of its 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025).
Expanding high-level opening-up was identified by China’s leadership as one of the priorities for economic work in 2024 and highlighted in this year’s government work report.
Hunan is a key economic province in central China, whose total economic output exceeded 5 trillion yuan ($0.69 trillion) for the first time last year.
During his visit to BASF Shanshan Battery Materials Co., Xi also briefed on efforts to promote opening up to high standards.
Hunan aims to become a key region for central China’s reform and opening-up. Xi had called on the province to deeply integrate into the Belt and Road Initiative and promote the innovative development of foreign trade.
