CGTN: “For the Good of My People”: Xi Jinping’s Dedication to Service

Beijing (ots/PRNewswire) 55 years ago, 15-year-old Xi Jinping went to the village of Liangjiahe in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province as an “educated youth.” He later spent seven years in the countryside, working and living with farmers.

Those years helped solidify his belief in doing practical things for people, Xi recalls.

After being elected general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in November 2012, he promised to continue working for the people. “People’s desire for a happy life is our mission.”

From rural party secretary to general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, to Chinese president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, Xi Jinping always has his eyes on the country and sees himself as a servant of the people.

man of the people

Xi came to Liangjiahe as a curious teenager and left as a 22-year-old man determined to serve the people.

He later went to Zhengding, a poor county in northern China’s Hebei Province. Li Yaping was an official in Zhengding County at the time and recalled Xi saying China had a lot of work to do and needed people to take responsibility.

Even at a young age, Xi seemed uninterested in the benefits of office. He traveled for days, sometimes into the mountains, to talk to local people, find out about their difficulties and help them solve their problems.

In Zhengding, Xi rode an old bicycle throughout the district and noted that the state’s annual grain procurement quota of 38 million kilograms was causing local people to go hungry.

In a letter to the CPC Central Committee, he pointed out that local farmers’ difficulties were due to high procurement rates. After the investigative team learned about the situation, it reduced the quota from 38 million kilograms to 24 million kilograms.

Cheng Baohuai, then secretary of the Zhengding District CPC Committee, recalled that people appreciated Xi’s work and said they finally had enough to eat. Xi was truly rooted in the people and took people’s needs to heart, Cheng said.

“For the good of my people.”

Since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, Xi has visited more than 100 venues, both in urban and rural areas.

He raised concerns about the adequate supply of food markets on holidays, residents’ access to medical care and the pay of migrant workers. Meeting the urgent needs of the people is on the agenda of the central authorities and has become the driving force of reforms.

“We are now pursuing a people-centered development philosophy,” Xi said at a symposium on eradicating extreme poverty on June 23, 2017. “People-centered development must focus on what people need most.”

Under Xi’s leadership, China has undergone a historic transformation: absolute poverty has been eliminated and its 1.4 billion rural people have achieved moderate prosperity.

Per capita disposable income in China rose by 6.1 percent in 2023 compared to the previous year and the income gap between urban and rural residents continued to narrow. Poverty alleviation achievements have been consolidated and expanded, with per capita income in rural areas lifted out of poverty increasing by 8.4 percent last year.

“Chinese modernization aims to ensure that development is for the people and by the people, and that its fruits are shared by the people,” Xi said at a seminar in February 2023.

Asked how he felt after being elected president of China during a visit to Italy, Xi acknowledged that ruling such a large country is a big responsibility and a difficult task, but he wants to work for China’s development insert.

“For the good of my people, I will put my own well-being aside,” Xi said.
