The cold of hockey could not contain the heat of China Media Group’s Chinese New Year celebration at a National Hockey League game between the New York Islanders and the Tampa Bay Lightning in New York on February 8, 2024.
Videos with Spring Festival and New Year greetings were shown to over 17,000 viewers. “I wish you all to be like soaring dragons and leaping tigers, full of longevity and health,” said CMG President Shen Haixiong. Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng wishes people a “prosperous Year of the Dragon” , also known as the Year of the Loong in Chinese.
During game breaks, New York Islanders mascot Sparky the Dragon and a host jointly presented viewers with gifts from “Loong Chenchen,” the official mascot of the CMG 2024 Spring Festival Gala.
Those attending the NHL game were also invited to participate in cultural activities organized by CMG such as: For example, taking a photo with “Loong Chenchen”, writing scrolls for the Spring Festival, and receiving posters with the character “Fu”, which means happiness and joy in Chinese.

The celebrations are in keeping with Chinese traditions of family coming together, letting go of the past and welcoming the new and good of the new year.
Hockey fans left the game with a new knowledge and appreciation for Chinese New Year. And some lucky children with a stuffed dragon as a new friend.
