Presentation of the certificates for the Danube Limes UNESCO World Heritage Site

St.Pölten (OTS) On Thursday, December 7th, from 6 p.m., there will be a ceremony at Spitz Castle to mark 1,200 years of the Wachau’s first naming, including the presentation of the certificates for the Danube Limes UNESCO World Heritage Site:
The Wachau, already one of the most important economic regions in Lower Austria in the early Middle Ages, was mentioned for the first time in 823, exactly 1,200 years ago, in one of the country’s oldest documents. At that time, Emperor Ludwig the Pious confirmed to the Bishop of Passau the property given to him by his father Charlemagne, including the Wachau.

In a lecture by the state archive director Dr. In a first step, the general development of Lower Austria in the decades around 823 is explained to Roman Zehetmayer in order to shed light on the background and context of this first mention. In a second step, the document from 823 and the significance of the Wachau in this phase are analyzed.

As part of the celebrations, the Wachau communities of Schönbühel-Aggsbach, Rossatz-Arnsorf and Mautern will also be presented with the UNESCO certificate that declares the Danube Limes, the former border line of the Roman Empire along the Danube, in which the three communities have a share, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Status that the Wachau already has.
