Enjoy the exquisite taste of Julius Meinl’s newest limited edition coffee, Burundi Gakenke 100% Arabica, created to celebrate International Coffee Day 2024. Each sip of the single origin coffee reveals a hint of blood orange aroma, complemented by subtle notes of black tea and finishing with the rich sweetness of caramelized brown sugar.
The naturally processed Red Bourbon variety comes from the renowned Gakenke station in the Burundian province of Kayanza. It is hand-picked and sorted before being dried as a whole cherry, giving it a vibrant floral scent, rich sweetness and fruity taste.
Gakenke Station represents over 1,700 smallholder farmers and is operated by the respected Burundian company Greenco. Greenco provides agrotechnical support and programs to improve socioeconomic and environmental conditions in the community. As part of the Julius Meinl The Originals Limited Edition Series, this specialty coffee represents the highest coffee art and a commitment to sustainable practices that promote the well-being of coffee communities for future generations.
Julius Meinl’s The Originals Limited Edition Series consists of coffees selected from the freshest micro-lot harvests, meeting Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) standards and roasted in small batches at Julius Meinl’s headquarters in Vienna, Austria. Gakenke coffee from Burundi received a respectable score of 86 on the SCA scale.

Caskara: A unique coffee-meets-tea experience
With the increasing demand for coffee, interest in innovative coffee drinks is also growing. For HoReCa partners who want to offer their guests a sustainable coffee experience that goes beyond the bean, Julius Meinl offers two organic cascara teas: Activitea Cascara organic herbal tea (loose) and the new Intensive Cascara Lemon-Lime-Olong/ Green tea bags released for International Coffee Day.
The name is derived from Spanish peel ab, which means “husk” and refers to the dried outer layer of the coffee cherry. Typically, cascara is disposed of as waste or composted, but the recent increase in popularity of cascara offers coffee farmers an additional source of income. When brewed, cascara produces a sweet, fruity drink with a higher caffeine content than black tea but milder than that of coffee. Known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, cascara is a healthy and sustainable drink.
Julius Meinl’s premium cascara products are certified organic, the cascara comes from Peru and can be enjoyed as a hot or cold drink. Find out more about Julius Meinl’s range of products and services at Premium coffee and tea | Julius Meinl.
