At Solar & Storage Live (SSL) 2024, CATL introduced the TENER Flex Rack energy storage system, expanding its TENER range with a groundbreaking solution that combines flexibility, security and performance, promoting the global transition to green energy with innovative solutions, that meet market needs.

In June of this year, CATL presented its first TENER product, TENER Base, an energy storage system in TEU containers, in Munich. With its advanced safety features in various areas, zero degradation in the first 5 years of use and an energy yield of over 6 MWh, TENER Base has quickly gained popularity and recognition in the industry. It is part of CATL’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of its customers.

Recognizing the geographical challenges of commercial battery storage in the UK and Europe, CATL has developed TENER Flex, a compact solution that reduces product size while providing the high level of safety, long life and exceptional energy density that characterizes the TENER brand. “Flex”, short for flexibility, represents the groundbreaking improvements in the usability of this product. TENER Flex features the zero degradation characteristic of the TENER brand and is designed for a variety of applications that adapt to different topographical conditions, Adjust climate conditions and various energy storage scenarios.

Flexible scalability and application options

TENER Flex features an optimized construction that can be mounted on skids in a space-saving back-to-back configuration to maximize storage station benefits through flexibility. As energy supply systems deteriorate, the need for additional energy increases, which is often associated with high costs. TENER Flex offers a solution with the option of a string voltage converter system (String-PCS), which allows AC side addition and simplifies installation. Compatibility with existing infrastructure and reduced labor, time and operational costs make it ideal for large-scale projects requiring high end-of-life storage capacity.

Flexible power distribution

TENER Flex offers flexible power distribution that meets the diverse needs of large industrial and residential applications. It supports both string PCS and centralized PCS and integrates with voltage converter systems from 600V to 1500V for seamless operation. Each rack operates independently, ensuring system continuity even if one rack fails, increasing reliability and reducing downtime. With a scalable design that fits all centralized PCS on the market, TENER Flex minimizes maintenance costs and capital expenditure while adapting to the growing energy needs of projects of all sizes.

Flexible operating environments

TENER Flex can withstand temperatures from -40°C to 60°C, can be used at altitudes of up to 4,000 meters and is IP56 protected against heavy rain and 0-100% humidity. It ensures reliable performance in any environment, from urban areas to extreme conditions such as deserts and snowy mountains.

Flexible transport

Until now, the transport of energy storage devices has been a major obstacle to flexible use. TENER Flex has met this challenge through its compatibility with a wide range of vehicles, meeting the transportation needs in different regions of the world.

Reliable noise and safety management

TENER Flex combines energy efficiency with strict noise and safety management. Its improved design achieves a noise level of 65 decibels, significantly reducing noise in environments such as hospitals, schools and markets.

The commitment to safety remains at the heart of TENER Flex. It uses a validation platform to simulate grid-level security threats under various power grid scenarios and reinforce standards to meet all requirements. Each cell is monitored throughout its life cycle, allowing for timely maintenance, optimized performance and extended life. With an industry-leading PPB-level failure rate for individual battery cells, TENER Flex reduces operating costs and improves lifecycle internal rate of return (IRR).

CATL has established a strong presence in the UK market, completing more than 40 projects with a total capacity of approximately 3 GWh where there have been no accidents. In 2021, CATL participated in Europe’s largest grid-side battery energy storage project, the Minety Battery Energy Storage System. In 2022, CATL entered into a long-term contract with Gresham House to supply battery storage systems with a capacity of up to 10 GWh. In 2024, CATL worked with Rolls-Royce to integrate TENER products into the mtu EnergyPack QG solution.
