The mystery of the orcas

Since the summer of 2020, orcas have been damaging sailing yachts off the Strait of Gibraltar, destroying their steering systems and making them unable to maneuver. Several hundred boats were damaged and families and crews had to be rescued by the coast guard. Is the sea fighting back? Are orcas avenging the death of one of their babies in one of the world’s busiest waterways? Has a group of orcas even declared humans to be enemies? Even scientists are at a loss. Thomas Käsbohrer takes up the trail of the Orca mystery and reports in his lecture about possible causes of Orca attacks and experiences of sailors in Orca Alley.

Risk management as a method for preparing charter, vacation or blue water trips

After returning from his sailing trip from Slovenia to Guatemala, DI Vedernjak was asked again and again: “Weren’t you afraid, alone on the Atlantic?” His standard answer is: “No, I was well prepared!” But how do you actually prepare well ? Risk management helps to make the right decisions and procure targeted equipment to equip the ship. “Only the most necessary things on board – but completely” – KISS – Keep It Small and Simple. Speaker: DI Jörg Vedernjak.

Competence and action stage Hall 4

“Personal safety equipment at sea – what do I really need?” or “Safe during harbor maneuvers – strength and leverage determine our actions”. Further interesting discussions on the topics: “Buying a used boat – what should you pay attention to?” or “Sailing holidays with children – arousing joy, avoiding stress and danger!”. This and much more can be found on the competence and action stage in Hall 4.

Diver Action Stage Hall 8

Sea Shepherd: Protecting species in the world’s oceans

The ocean forms the basis of all life on our planet. Destroying the delicate ecosystem of the world’s oceans also means destroying our future. The consequences of the climate catastrophe, increasing littering and rampant overfishing are pushing the ocean to the edge of its carrying capacity. Sea Shepherd fights on the front lines of ocean conservation in direct action campaigns. The content of the lecture will be in which areas we are active, which animal species are protected and what each of us can do for marine protection.

Shark Project – International Shark and Species Conservation Organization

Hands Off: Diving with sharks is a sensitive topic and it’s hard to say what’s right and what’s wrong. Every encounter is a blind date. The best way to understand it is to be able to interpret the shark’s movements and pay attention to the do’s and don’ts. The second lecture is about shark accidents: what is considered a shark accident and what factors can lead to a shark accident.
