On September 2, 2024, 90 apprentices will start their apprenticeship with the Federal Army – the Federal Army is taking another step against the shortage of skilled workers. As a prospective apprentice, you can choose between around 40 different apprenticeships at different training locations throughout Austria. A total of 260 apprentices are learning an apprenticeship in the Federal Army. The areas range from electronics, saddlery and professional photography to metal processing. There is also the opportunity to learn special apprenticeships, such as aircraft technicians in an aviation shipyard. The apprenticeships for 2025 will be announced at the end of October this year.
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner: “Apprenticeships are an important foundation for young people’s further professional careers. Through an apprenticeship with the Armed Forces, the federal government’s largest employer, you get the chance to learn an interesting profession in a diverse working environment and thus take a first step towards a promising career. I am pleased that we can once again offer numerous new apprentices an exciting apprenticeship this year and support them in their professional and personal development!”
The current 90 apprenticeships that start on September 2nd of this year show how diverse the apprenticeships are in the armed forces. Most of them were advertised in Vienna in 2024. For example, among the 30 newly filled apprenticeship positions, you could choose between an apprenticeship as a technical draftsman, administrative assistant or pharmaceutical-commercial assistant. Likewise, 19 apprenticeship positions were filled in Styria and 17 apprenticeship positions in Upper Austria. From September, 19 aircraft technicians will be trained in addition to other apprenticeships in Upper Austria and Styria as well as in Lower Austria. In Lower Austria, nine apprenticeship positions were filled, including in the areas of operational logistics or the hotel and catering industry, while in Carinthia six apprentices are starting their training, for example as carpenters. Likewise, four apprentices are starting an apprenticeship with the Federal Army in Salzburg, four apprentices in Tyrol and one apprentice in Burgenland.
If you decide to do an apprenticeship with the armed forces, the apprentice test must be completed at the testing centers in Wels or Vienna. General knowledge, German, mathematics, English and sporting skills are tested. A psychological test and a practical apprentice test must also be carried out at the training site. During the following training, you learn theory at the vocational school and gain practical experience in the armed forces. As an apprentice in the armed forces, you receive a number of advantages, such as application training, excursions, apprentice days, apprentice sports days or visits to troops. There is also the option of completing the apprenticeship with a high school diploma.
