Cakes, glasses, welding machines – everything is packed in corrugated cardboard

Hardly any product today can do without protective waves. Whether food, toys or even welding machines – the variety of applications is impressive. The domestic corrugated cardboard industry has made it its mission to develop outstanding packaging solutions that are both functional and sustainable.

For the tenth time in a row, the best packaging solutions made from corrugated cardboard were honored as part of the Wellpappe Austria Awards. A jury selected the finalists and winners from numerous submissions. The award is presented in six categories and recognizes the innovative strength and creativity of the industry. This year, a special prize was again awarded for outstanding print design.

Corrugated champions on stage
Once a year we bring our corrugated cardboard champions onto the big stage and honor them with the Wellpappe Austria Awards,” says Stephan Kaar, spokesman for the domestic corrugated cardboard industry. “The award is the annual performance showcase and shows the importance and added value of our packaging material for industry, trade and consumers. Corrugated cardboard packaging offers protection, increases durability, is an advertising ambassador and is inherently sustainable.“

Awards and cabaret
Around 100 guests took part in the award ceremony at the cabaret CasaNova in Vienna and were just as enthusiastic about the ideas as they were about the gags by cabaret artist Gerald Fleischhacker. Each winner of a Wellpappe Austria Award received an original wooden sculpture by the Vorarlberg artist Stefan Kresser. The event is not only a tribute to the best packaging solutions, but also a platform to showcase the benefits of corrugated cardboard as an environmentally friendly and versatile packaging material. Daniela Soykan-Tober hosted the award ceremony.

Corrugated cardboard – who invented it?
More than 150 years ago, Albert Jones came up with the idea of using corrugated paper to protect glass bottles. Based on the model of a pleated fabric, the waves gave the paper the necessary stability. A short time later, Jones invented the first corrugated cardboard by gluing a sheet of paper to the corrugated paper. In 1871, a packaging material was created that would conquer the world. You can find out more about the sustainable packaging material on the Website of the Forum Wellpappe Austria.
