Together with the mayor and the 2nd mayor of Eisenstadt, Thomas Steiner and Charlotte Toth-Kanyak, Burgenland Energie now opened a state-of-the-art biomass heating plant in Eisenstadt.
The new system replaces oil and gas in the heat range. Water is heated in a low -emission process with wood chips from the region. A district heating network thus supplies households and companies with a renewable warmth from Eisenstadt.
The existing system was expanded from 7 megawatts to 14 megawatts, produces around 25,000 megawatt hours a year and uses a district heating network of 24 kilometers (as of 2024). Around 1,300 households, the diocese in Eisenstadt, the municipality of Eisenstadt and companies such as the Esterhazy companies, the settlement cooperatives OSG, new Eisenstadt and EBSG as well as the ORF state studio Burgenland are supplied with environmentally friendly warmth.
“Burgenland is already a pioneer in Austria when generating renewable electricity from regional sources. We are number 1 in wind power and we are number 1 in solar power. The next task is that we lead the heat supply from the dependency of foreign sources to get ourselves with domestic heat sources,” said Stephan Sharma, CEO of Burgenland Energy. “We show that we can also supply ourselves with Burgenland energy. With electricity and heat. This is an important step for the energy independence and energy security of people and companies in Eisenstadt. We are therefore also deliberately investing in the Burgenland energy infrastructure and the Burgenland business location.”
Mayor Thomas Steiner: “As the city of Eisenstadt, we endeavor to make sustainable and liveable politics. The exit from fossil energy is a very essential component. The opening of this new heating plant in Eisenstadt ensures a regional, safe and sustainable energy supply for the city’s citizens.”
Vice Mayor Charlotte Toth-Kanyak: “As the capital of our federal state, we have two important tasks: Of course, one is to supply households and the companies in Eisenstadt with predictable, safe, clean warmth. But we also have a role model function: We want to show the cities and communities in Burgenland that the change is possible and, above all, economically and ecologically sensible.”
