Brenner Base Tunnel Hochstegen – another construction project completed before Christmas

According to plan, the end of construction work on the “H52 Hochstegen” construction lot near the Brenner border can now be announced.

Innsbruck/Bozen (OTS) Like the South Tyrolean construction lot “Eisackunterquerung”, “Hochstegen” was also a very complex and challenging lot. This is because this section was located in water-bearing, carbonate rock layers of the so-called “Hochstegen zone”.

Therefore, in addition to tunnel excavation work in the Hochstegen zone, extensive injections and safety measures had to be carried out over a 23-month construction period in order to enable safe excavation.

The construction lot was actually very manageable, with a total of five kilometers of tunnel excavation“, explains the person in charge Project manager Michael Knapp. However, it was very challenging to drive through the water-bearing, carbonate rock layers. Approximately 900 meters of exploratory tunnels had to be excavated in the direction of the Brenner.

Project manager Michael Knapp sees the end of construction as another successful milestone in the BBT project: “Despite the technically challenging geology, we managed to do it within the specified construction time. Thanks go to the responsible construction company and, above all, to the miners who did a great job under these difficult tunnel construction conditions. This makes us confident for the following construction lot H53 Pfons-Brenner“.

The project company BBT SE as the client and its board members, Martin Gradnitzer and Gilberto Cardola are delighted about the completion of a further tunnel section after crossing under the Eisack this year: “In this area, the exploration tunnel is only two kilometers away from the state border at the Brenner. With the breakthrough, the tunnel will connect the two states of Italy and Austria underground for the first time.”

Change of construction lots from H52 to H53
At the end of 2023, the “H52 Hochstegen” area will be handed over to the subsequent construction company, which is responsible for the new “H53 Pfons-Brenner” section, so to speak.

Project data for construction lot H52 Hochstegen
Blasting a total of five kilometers of tunnel:
