Vienna (OTS) – On Wednesday, July 17, 2024, the month-long festival season starts again on Lake Constance: from the ceremonial opening ceremony with Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, to the new house opera, Gioacchino Rossini’s rarely performed opera thriller “Tancredi”, to to “Play on the Lake”, Carl Maria von Weber’s popular opera “Der Freischütz” – the ORF delivers the highlights of the 78th Bregenz Festival directly to its audience and, with ORF ON, also on the go. In addition, a multimedia focus by ORF offers a comprehensive accompanying program to this year’s festival edition. As part of current cultural reporting, the “ZIB” programs, “Vorarlberg today”, Ö1, ORF Radio Vorarlberg, ORF III as well as oe1.ORF.at and vorarlberg.ORF.at also provide detailed information about the Lake Constance Festival.
The opening day on ORF
The “Opening of the Bregenz Festival 2024” produced by ORF Vorarlberg can be seen on Wednesday, July 17th (9:55 a.m., ORF 2 and 3sat). From Monday, July 15th to Friday, July 19th, “Guten Morgen Österreich” (from 6:30 a.m., ORF 2) will report on the events from Bregenz. A “Culture Today Special” (7.40 p.m., ORF III) will also be dedicated to the festival opening on July 17th. ORF Vorarlberg broadcasts “Vorarlberg today” (7 p.m., ORF 2 V) live from Bregenz. ORF Radio Vorarlberg broadcasts from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from the glass studio directly in front of the festival grounds.
The operas “Der Freischütz” and “Tancredi” as well as the other accompanying TV program on ORF
As part of the ORF Cultural Summer 2024, two opera productions from the Bregenz Festival can be seen: For 2024/25, “Rigoletto” maker Philipp Stölzl returns and stages Carl Maria von Weber’s “Der Freischütz” (Friday, July 19, live – delayed, 9:20 p.m., ORF 2; Saturday, August 31, 8:15 p.m., 3sat) on the largest lake stage in the world. This year’s new house production in Bregenz – Gioacchino Rossini’s rarely performed opera thriller “Tancredi” about love, trust and misfortune in times of crisis, with which the composer achieved his breakthrough at the age of just 20 – can also be experienced on ORF: ORF III is showing a recording ( Sunday, August 25th, 11:45 p.m.) of the drama based on the tragedy “Tancrède” by Voltaire. Under the musical direction of Yi-Chen Lin at the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Anna Goryachova, Mélissa Petit and Antonino Siragusa will sing, among others. On July 15th, “kulturMontag” (10:30 p.m., ORF 2) will focus on the festival. ORF Vorarlberg’s “Bregenz Festival Magazine” (Friday, July 19th, live, 6:30 p.m., ORF 2; Sunday, July 21st, 9:35 a.m., ORF III) shows the highlights of the festival. “Der Freischütz – Festival fever on Lake Constance” (Sunday, July 28th, 4:30 p.m., ORF 2) is also the focus of a new “Experience Austria” edition.
All TV program items from the opening day, the two opera productions and the accompanying TV program relating to the Bregenz Festival will also be available to stream on ORF ON.
78th Bregenz Festival in Ö1
The festival broadcaster Ö1 will broadcast the premiere of Gioacchino Rossini’s “Tancredi” live (Thursday, July 18, 7:30 p.m.). The Vienna Symphony Orchestra performs under the direction of Yi-Chen Lin, with Antonino Siragusa (Argirio), Anna Goryachova (Tancredi), Andreas Wolf (Orbazzano), Mélissa Petit (Amenaide), Laura Polverelli (Isaura) and the Prague Philharmonic Choir . On Saturday, August 10th, a concert by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra can be heard in “Apropos Klassik” (3:05 p.m.). Enrique Mazzola conducts works by Emilie Mayer, Carl Maria von Weber, Modest Mussorgsky and Igor Stravinsky, with Sabine Meyer as the clarinetist. On Friday, August 23rd, from 7:30 p.m., the Vienna Symphony Orchestra will perform works by Carl Maria von Weber, Robert Schumann and Thomas Larcher under the direction of Petr Popelka, with the Prague Philharmonic Choir singing. A concert by the Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Leo McFall – violinist: Franziska Hölscher – with works by Antonin Dvořák, Ondřej Adámek and Ludwig van Beethoven is on the Ö1 program on Friday, August 30th, from 7.30 p.m. On Saturday, September 28th, a recording of an Orchestra Academy concert conducted by Daniel Cohen can be heard from 3:05 p.m. Works by Arnold Schönberg, Richard Strauss and Béla Bartók will be played, and soprano Marlis Petersen will sing.

The ORF will broadcast the “Opening of the Bregenz Festival 2024” in a fully barrier-free manner live on ORF 2. For deaf and hearing-impaired viewers, live subtitles are available on ORF TELETEXT on page 777 and on ORF ON.
