BMW Art Car by Julie Mehretu celebrates world premiere (PHOTO)

Paris/Munich (ots) The BMW Group presented the 20th BMW Art Car to the public for the first time at the Center Pompidou in Paris. The vehicle designed by contemporary artist Julie Mehretu, a long-distance prototype BMW M Hybrid V8, continues a long racing tradition of the BMW Art Cars Collection. Just a few weeks after its world premiere in the French capital, it will take part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“I realized that the whole Art Car project was about creating something new, being inventive and pushing boundaries to see what was possible,” says Julie Mehretu. “I see the vehicle as a performative painting – it was created for the racetrack and not for the museum. The art car will only be finished when the Le Mans race is over.”

“The BMW Art Cars are an essential part of our global cultural commitment,” says Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “For almost 50 years we have been cooperating with artists who are just as fascinated by mobility and design as they are by technology and motorsport. Julie Mehretu’s art on a racing car is an extraordinarily strong contribution to our BMW Art Cars series. Julie Mehretu has more than “We created a great art car. Their vision gave us the impetus to expand the cultural commitment of the Art Cars to include a social project for the first time in order to promote the creativity of young people in Africa.”

The collaboration between BMW and Julie Mehretu also includes a joint commitment to the PanAfrican Translocal Media Workshops for artists and filmmakers, which will tour various African cities in 2025 and 2026.
